I've just picked up a Shrek DVD on sale and have tried to rip it to HD, but all 3 DVD-ROM drives I've tried to rip it on have ground to a halt at about 50% using DVD Decrypter and Smartripper.

I remember there being some articles about the protection on Shrek a while back but they've been archived since.

    Any suggestions?
    Regards,

    Rob

I have a 3 year old grandson who truly believes DVD are disposable, so I have to make a new copy every few weeks of Shrek without any problems. Could you have a damaged disc, if so have you tried the toothpaste trick?

As I recall, shrek has multiple keys for each VOB. Just preview the whole disk in PowerDVD first (jump chpaters all teh way through) then try ripping. Yours may also be damaged.

  5. @ rheghedus... shrek doesn't have any type of special copyright protection..too many people post things they have no clue what they are posting..which is probably why you thought it has some special protection on it. Another fallacy is that Disney uses special protection...i've never ran into any problems with any disney titles. If a disk doesn't rip it's because it's damaged or your drive is damaged. The most likely of the two is the disk. You said you got it on sale....was it used or new?

There's some type of scratch ont here that you probably can't see. I did Shrek when it came out and it was cake just like most othe rmovies. If I remember correctly..many copies of shrek came in a two disk set...one disk full screen..the other..widescreen. Both were cake to back up. Try some scratch repair solution...the stuff really works "MOST" of the time.

    Thanks for the info guys.

The copy of Shrek is an ex-rental that was bought at the rental shop on a sold as seen basis

The surface looks to have quite a few scratches on it, but being naive I fell for the crap about CDs and DVDs being indestructable

I'll try the toothpaste trick first - does it have to be any particular type?

  7. @ Rheghedus.... Crest is the BEST....that's the only toothpaste approved by the Dental Association to keep your DVD's cavity free.

On a serious note.....be very careful with the toothpaste and DO NOT rub in any circular motion. My first disk went from having the last vob unreadable before I applied the toothpaste...to having the damn thing completely destroyed AFTER. I tried again with a different movie I had problems ripping..and used an extremely small amount on the most noticeable scratches. Rub it in softly and take it off with water and rubbing straight outward. Good Luck
