Hey people I would like to know if there's a way to reduce in size some large MPEGs I have without changing to .AVI etc.

If you simply want to keep them on your Hard Drive, you will need to re-encode to a lower bitrate. If your final destination is DVD, you could author them as normal, but save to a titleset on you HD before burning, then use something like DVD shrink to fit it on the DVDr.
