Background: I am trying to convert miniDV tapes (on my camcorder) to PC (via Firewire) and eventually to DVD.
It seems that there are two separate ways to do this:
1. Use an "all-in-one" software product (Pinnacle Studio 8, NeroVisionExpress, Sonic MYDVD, Ulead DVD MovieFactory, etc.).
2. Use a "best-of-breed" solution.
I have already tried the all-in-one solution (using NeroVision Express 2) and am quite pleased with the result.
I am now in the process of tyring the best-of-breed solution. I have tried the following:
Capture: WinDV, DVIO, Scenalyzer
Edit: VirtualDub
Encode: TMPGEnc
Author/Burn: TMPGEnc DVD Author
Now to the question...
How can I add transitions, scrolling titles, etc. to the video? I can't seem to find this functionality in any of the above-mentioned products.
For example, at the end of the video I would like to add credits that would scroll up or down. I would also like to add transitions such as fades or wipes in between scenes.

I'm sure there are solutions for that in Virtualdub, but they are probably more kludgy than using a video editing app such as Vegas, Premiere, Media Studio Pro, etc.
I use Vegas, and it includes tons of transitions, text effects, etc. Virtualdub is an indispensible tool, but it was never meant to compete with non-linear editing programs.- housepig

if money is an issue, there are three freeware non-linear editing programs I know of - Zwei-Stein, MovieXone and ABC VideoRoll.
AIST doesn't offer downloads of the free version of MovieXone anymore, but there are still some servers out there that have it - same with ABC VideoRoll, apparently the company is out of business, but it's floating around on the net.
If you are diligent on Google, you should be able to find either of them with some digging. search for the progam name in quotes, followed by the words "download", "exe" or "zip" - I found both of them, but it took about 10 pages of digging each.
Cheapware - if you check your local CompUSA or MicroCenter, you might be able to find an older copy of Ulead Video Studio - I have a copy of UVS 5 that I got for under $10, new in the box. the company Magix used to make a program called Magix Audio / Video, it will do multitrack audio and video editing - I found a copy on the closeout rack at Office Depot for around $10, it was the Deluxe edition which included a DVD full of stock footage.- housepig
