  1. HI all, i have tried quite a few dvd to dvdr programs just wanted to say a few comments.

    Instant copy 8

I have found this program to be very slow at encoding the film. The quality is great. But burning is very slow to.

    Pros

    Great quality
    easy to use

    Cons

    Very slow
Can't make a back up of a back up.
Only makes images which can only be copied by Instant copy.
Does not copy incrypted DVDs without the use of a third party app

    Clone DVD

This is an ok program i would not say its the best nor the worst in quality but a very easy to use app for the first timer. I still think clone can do a lot better when it comes to the encoding.

    Pros

    Very fast at encoding
    easy to use interface
Can make iso or dvd files

    Cons

    Quality could be better.
No option to back up data dvd to dvdr
Does not copy incrypted DVDs without the use of a third party app

    DVD X COPY Express

Well this program to me could be one of the best programs but still needs a lot of Work. The picture quality is great, i would say it is on par with instant copy 8 from the screen shoots i have captured and taken and compared close up.

    Pros

    Copies Encrypted DVDs
    Fast at encoding
    Easy to use interface.
    Very Good movie quality.

    Cons

Splash Screen at the start (if that bothers you??)
Can not make back up of copy.
Writing quality to dvdr needs improving
    Reading Orignals
    Not cheap to buy

    DVD SHRINK

Well this program i must say is not what its all hyped up to be, yes i like the user interface and yes it has some nice options but the video quality is not the best at all when it is compared to the above, even with perform deep analysis which takes a lot longer and the quality output is not really that much better. But hey its free.

    Pro

    Nice interface
    Nice Options
    Copies Encrypted DVDs
    Free

    Cons

Needs a lot of Work done to improve Picture quality
Sometimes it makes the file to big to copy to DVDR
    No burning Option

    Films i tested

    Thomas Crown Affair
    What women Want
LOrd of the Rings Tow Towers
    Perfect Storm
    Smallville Box set
    Indinan Jones BOx set
    American Pie 1 and 2

I just have to add that my Dvd Writer (plextor 708a) has just been sent back to be repaired so i don't know if it is possible to make a back up of a back where i stated you couldn't.

All the tests were done with just one app installed and a complete reinstall each time so no conflicts happend between each app.

  2. Have you tried dvd2one. Add your favorite decrypter and it is very easy to use. About 3 minutes of your time and an hour of the computer's time is all it takes to get a copy that looks great.

  3. i have not tried dvd2one yet, i'm giving them all a go. I must admit i do the quality dvd x copy express gives. I would use it to burn to media either. I collect dvd limited edition boxsets and i just want to make a perfect back. I just don't why you can't make a back of dvd ripped by dvd x copy express from dvd-r to another dvd-r. Even when ripped from the dvd-r to the hard drive and trying to copy it from there it does not work.

hi, you obviously have spent considerable time and effort to express your thoughts here and thank you for that. i find that DVD Shrink produces backups that are indistinguishable for the original. but then again i have not used the other tools you mentioned. i have used dvd2one and that also gives comparable results.
i was wondering the next time you make comparisions can you post screen captures that show results from the tools you use to make the comparisions? that way we will SEE what you saw. thanks

for example earlier this week or maybe last week a fellow stated one tool (i forget which one) was better than Shrink. so he posted numerous high-quality screen captures to illustrate his point. well, wouldn't you know it i thought (as well as others) Shrink produced more detailed pictures with the same amount of noise than the OTHER tool
anyway thanks again for expressing your opinions.

  5. hey Kent2,

I understand that DVD X COPY cannot copy a copy. But you indicated you were only backing up originals...why would that matter?

The way around it is to use DVD X COPY to make your backs. and if you need to copy a backup, just use a different program.

And one particular program you didn't mention was INTERVIDEO DVD COPY.

My personal preference (for lack of real knowledge) is:
DVD DECRYPTER to rip DVD to HD.
    DVD2ONE to compress DVD9 to DVD5 size.
    INTERVIDEO DVD COPY to burn.

I currently don't have a second DVD Drive (will get one this week). But if you have one, you could skip the DVD2ONE and just use INTERVIDEO DVD COPY with Drive to Drive burning. But you'd need a program like ANY DVD to do that.

Well...that's about the extent of my knowledge on the topic!

    that's my story...and i'm sticking to it! :P

  6. yeah i still use DVD Decrypter excellent tool for burning and ripping. I have not tried dvd2one yet and i will give it blast. I use x copy express to rip the dvd and i use nero to burn the dvd, but the burnt dvd will not copy for some reason. I still do have the screen shots wich i took with power dvd 5 i will try and post them ok. Thanks for the input

  7. I have pictures of the thomas crown ripped by instant copy 8, X Copy express and dvd Shrink. You will notice has i have just how much better the others are over dvd shrink, DVD SHRINK DVD QUALITY IS S***. I'M sorry to say this but i think some people need to get there glasses out. So how do i get these pictures posted. They are bigger than 50kb and i don't want to have to reduce them so quality is lost.

  9. i have been busy tonight ripping thomas crown affair with dvd2one and also dvd shrink. I can't wait to get this pics posted. I have kept looking over the pictures of all the different rips and you can tell the difference quite a lot just need to know what your looking at and for. DVD2one is really good app for quality. I have taken a clip at 34mins 42seconds in to the thomas crown affair and you can see by detail in the wall in the background is much better with dvd2one and dvd x copy than the rest. Dvd x copy Express is just a little tad better by showing a little more detail.

Wouldn't the most obvious explaination be that you simply cannot fit 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound hole? Most movies I've come across are on dual layer DVD. Making that fit to a single layer DVD is going to result in compression of some kind. DVDShrink is a MUCH better program than any "one touch" program I've seen. It allows YOU to pick out parts that are not necessary and compress parts at different increments of compression to get the best result. For me....I don't want all of that time wasting stuff on my backups like extras, trailers, upcoming attractions, interactive games....who needs that crap? Just do a movie only DVDR....you don't even need a menu....the movie will autostart in the DVD player anyway.

hhahahahhaha uhh thomas crown affair is a singel layer dvd, so the pq is the same as the org. so i just dont understand why youre getting different pq with different softwares.

You need to install ASPI drivers. Go to this link and download the ASPI DRIVERS according to what Operating System you are using.

I agree with hech54 that DVD SHRINK is a great "one touch" program. When using DVD SHRINK I don't do full back ups except when I do my Chinese and Korean dvd movies. The menu and subtitles are lost if I reauthor. I've done some movies with only 52% video compression and they play fine with the resolution decent on my SONY XBR 32 INCH TV, 20 INCH PANASONIC TV, & on my INITIAL PORTABLE DVD PLAYER 9520 that has a little 4 INCH screen. In my opinion you gotta have a fine eye to see a difference.

Clark Kent >>>>Why are you using DVD SHRINK if THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR is a single layer dvdr? Using DVD DECRYPTER would have been faster & easier. That's just my opinion.
