I'm (attempting) to turn a 9 minute VHS into a small DivX file that might be downloaded from my site. I captured with Virtualdub, then encoded with TMPgen, and burned with MyDVD and finally tried to convert to DivX with Fairuse. Comes up with an error and says the video is not all the same! Can't figure that one out. Next I tried AutoGordianknot ..... but came up with a huge file size. Do I need to process again with TMPgen at a lower frame rate to keep the size down? (This is a presentation, no action). Any shortcuts, advice, hints greatly appreciated.

Use Virtual Dub mod. Load the video, select Video-->Compression. Selecrt the DivX codec you want, then select configure. Lower the fram rate, and select File--> Save as. That is what I would do.

Thanks Tommyknocker, I got my 650 MB avi down to a 50 MB DivX avi with good quality. My next step is to run it through Macromedia Flash and see if it can be viewed online (or subsequently downloaded online) with enough quality to be acceptable. I'm learning so this might not even work ............
