My friend bought a HP dvd writer 200e which is dvd+r/+rw. The HP +r dvd that was created was only able to play on a Go Video Dvd Combo player and a Sony laptop. So I went out and purchased a Sony SLC-D300P & a Magnovox player that were both +r/+rw compatible, but still couldn't play them. I also tried TDK dvd+r media which could only play on the Sony laptop.
Now I think I'm ready to purchase a dvd writer & another player for myself. I was going to buy +r but now with all the fails I'm thinking about buying a combination writer.
Can anyone recommend a dvd writer thats +r/-r combination & media that are compatible and high quality?
Thank You!

If you wanna use quality and highly compatible media, go with NEC-1300A dual format drive. I got one, it was cheap to buy, works very well and should last. It's rated at 4x for both +/- that is reasonable speed.
As for the media, I mostly use Memorex +R 4x or Maxell -R 2x. For _RW disks, I use Verbatim +RW 2.4x.
Hope it helps. -
Sounds more like authoring or media errors, not the drive.

How to Author, on the left of this site.
If you are looking for a drive for yourself, I would recommend the Pioneer A06.
And this is in the wrong forum, moving to DVD writers. -
My experience has been that media counts more than the drive in all cases. If it says it can burn both formats, then it can. The magic is in making the authoring program create a compliant DVD, and that's where dvdrhelp.com comes into play.
My advice? Go Optorite! -
I second the purchase of the NEC ND-1300A as it is an excellent 4x DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) burner.
It is the cheapest such multi-format burner that is A QUALIY and works rather well
As for media I only do DVD-R and I prefer to use Taiyo-Yuden which can be bought direct from RIMA.COM for the best price I've seen. The 10-pack of FUJI DVD-R discs you buy in retail stores is also made my Taiyo-Yuden but more expensive. Please note that the 10-pack says MADE IN JAPAN whereas the other larger numbered FUJI packs say MADE IN TAIWAN and are NOT the Taiyo-Yuden brand.
Another excellent brand you can find in some stores (in 5 and 10 packs) are the MAXELL DVD-R discs. They only burn at 2x but are excellent. The FUJI pack is 4x as are the Taiyo-Yuden media at RIMA.COM
Buying high quality media really pays off!
