  1. I was in a store today and they have the recorder on-sale for $250. The store price is $330 then they have a $50 instant rebate plus a $30 mail in rebate, Not a bad deal for a DVD recorder IMO. I wonder in this recorder has a built in TBC?

  2. Here is a like to the CompUSA site for this recorder.
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=309011&pfp=srch1&sid=3FCE79002DDBE17F

Nothing there about the recorder having an internal TBC. If it had one I may just buy one at this price.

Picked one up on Monday. Cannot see anything in the manual or Lite-On website talking about TBC.

What are your thoughts on the player so far? Any problems? I may just get one myself.

I still consider myself a newbie, but I pulled the first recording off of my Dish Network receiver throught the S-Video cable. Used the HQ recording mode 1 hour at 9.5Mbps, MPEG2, NTSC 720x480 (I know it is overkill for the source, but I have not figured out what mode to reduce to and still capture the sources best.) Loaded the disc in my Dell 8300 with +RW drive (I think it is Lite-On also) and could play with PowerDVD, no problems. Wanted to cut out commercials, so I downloaded Wombles MPEG Video Editor. Found out that the Lite-On recorder breaks the recording into 0.99GB files (is this common?) Not only did I have to cut out the commercials, but I had to put the clips back together creating little blips during playback. Burned back to DVD-RW (did I need to reencode, maybe a better way) and played on my Pioneer DVD/LD DVL-700. Plays without a problem, picture looks good, a/v is sync'd. I did notice some blocking? during the dark transitions that were not noticable on the original recording.

    Peace Out!

  8. Normal DVD's will have the VOB files in 1048 MB chunks. Hey thanks for the info on the recorder.

I rechecked and yes they are 1048MB, I guess when you hold your cursor over the file a little window pops up an says 0.99GB.

If the Sharp model can have a TBC and not mention it anywhere in all of creation, then I guess the LiteON can have one too. (I have verified that the Sharp does have one - it fixed a "jump" in a tape I had that a capture card or another VCR could not fix.)

  11. It was $199 at bestbuy about a week back, no rebates needed. These are pretty cheap as they aren't feature packed. Use Ritek media for best results.

Handyguy why Ritek? My first couple of trys have been with Fujifilm DVD+RW's and I have not seen any problems. What could I expect to see with FujiFilm or avoid with Ritek?

  13. Maybe price, how much are fuji?

I think Riteks are about 90 cents, maybe less
I buy printables in 100 packs and dvd cases 100 packs too.

Riteks are reliable, but Fuji probably are too. And nice thing about most standalones, 1x record?? Real time? Cheap disks, no need for 4x or 8x

    What about bitrate??

    Can it adjust bitrate automatically.

Panasonic units ... have Flex Recording ... punch in time to record and hit "start" ... Model 50 will calculate optimal bitrate for time alloted.

    Lite-On website Link >>> http://www.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/lvw_5001_2.htm

So does the Lite-On LW-5001 ... have anything similar ... or are we stuck with just those simple ... settings

    Mode -- Hour -- Bit Rate -- Encode -- NTSC PAL/SECAM
    HQ -- 1 -- 9.5Mpbs -- MPEG2 -- 720X480 720X576
    SP -- 2 -- 5.1Mpbs -- MPEG2 -- 720X480 720X576
    EP -- 4 -- 2.5Mpbs -- MPEG2 -- 352X480 352X576
    SLP -- 6 -- 1.7Mpbs -- MPEG1 -- 352X240 352X288

So far I didn't see any other recorder that has this function other than Panasonic.

Bummer ... no flex recording type of feature ...

Kind of like most vcrs today ... either 2 HR or 6 HR

    except for Panasonic VCRs ....

    SP ... 2HR
    LP ... 4HR
    EP ... 6HR

Needless to say out of the Five VCRs I use ... 3 of them are Panasonics.

LP ... which has much better picture than trying to use EP-6HR mode

  19. "Handyguy why Ritek?"

BEcause that is what the people at meritline.com said would work & they would know.

The Pioneer models have it (called Manual Recording I think) so does the new Philips DVDR77 (called Fit to space Recording I think).
