Though I can't give you any input on the Liteon, I like to tell as many people as possible to stay away from Memorex. They do not stand behind their products. I am not the only person to say this. I have found others who had issues. I bought a CD-Rom from them, and it stopped working. I put it into another system, still no dice. I then put a different CD-Rom in the original system and it worked. When I sent it back to Memorex, they sent it back to me and told me it was fine. It wasn't! I couldn't get any satisfaction from them, so I would never trust the company again, and like to tell others of my experiences.

  3. Definitly the LiteOn. At lie $30, it is one of the best buys I ever made!...it will greatly reduce the time you need to rip.

  4. I just bought a Lite On 16x Drive and am at rip speeds of 5.3-7.8x on average. My burner is Memorex and can only get 2-2.1x average.

    I am using a Lite-On LDW-411s 4x Dual Format drive....it works like a champ...I would highly recommend it.

  6. Pretty much everyone is going to recommend the Lite-on, do a forum search on rip speed. The Liteon 166 is unlocked and will rip at 5~15x (depends on DVD5 or DVD9 and if the data is encrypted or not). It goes for $30 mailorder (http://www.newegg.com). If you plan to rip/backup a lot of DVDs it's the drive to get.

  9. DEfinitly the Lite-on 16X DVD-ROM. I have used it for almost a yer now and it has never failed me yet. I have a Memorex 24 MAXX CD-RW nad it is the second one as the first collapsed and died after 2 weeks. So far it hasd behaved itself. As for DVDR, I am using a Pioneer 106 bought for £99 and an excellent drive for DVDs. I haven't tried on CDR yet though.

  10. Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a new DVD rom as well, my Sony is ripping average at 4X for dvd9/5. I search around and found LiteOn DVD has 2 models LTN-526 and LTD-165. I see you guy keep saying about Liteon DVD rom 166 but I could not find anywhere. please help.

  11. The DVD-ROM is the 165, it shows up in my device manager as JLMS-XJ-HD165H. I got it about 8 months ago for £35 , but i guess it will be around £30 by now (if not cheaper). It is great so far for me, as I backup my DVD's and PS2 games, also any music cd (for the car) and I have done a couple of PS1 games. ANything to save my heavy handed kids from wrecking my originals.

  12. Grab a 16x Lite-on from Newegg.com, I have several!

Never had a problem with any Lite-on product yet myself, I have like 4 Cd burners and 3 DVD drives. Thinking about going the big step and getting a lite-on DVD burner, but haven't yet gone that far

As for Memorex, I had one of their CD burners, it had a couple problems, they RMA it for me just fine no hassles. Was a few years ago though, but I sent in defective unit, got back brand new one. No complaint except That the first one messed up in the first place!

As for ripping speeds, I too hear about how fast Lite-one is. Though I have been doing my ripping with my toshiba burner. Did not have the extra ide connection for the DVD-rom till recently. Now I have toshiba DVD burner, Lite on CD Burner, Lite on DVD rom drive, 3 maxtor hard drives in my main system.

All my systems have Lite-on CD burners and DVD rom drives, even have one combo unit.

Mine starts off at about 4x but quickly works it way up to about 7-9x.

  16. Mines pretty much the same. Using DVDDecrytper, i can get an ISO image in about 5 mins (PS2), it takes maybe 20 mins using the file Mode for DVD.
