Memorex 8X Dual-Format Drive?

Saw this in CompUSA the other day for $199. Box art looks just like the Memorex 4X dual format, except that it says "8X/4X/4X". Appears that it burns +R at 8X speeds, comparable to the Plextor.

But here's the weird thing: I can't find any references to this drive on any website, including www.memorex.com!!!!! BestBuy, Circuit City, NewEgg, MeritLine, Shop4Tech ... nothing! It's as if this drive doesn't exist. I looked up the product# and confirmed that it was different than the 4X drive.

Anyone know anything about this drive?

No, I don't think so ... it only burns 8X with +R ... -R is still at 4X.

Besides, the press release says that the 8X8 drive doesn't come out until 2004. I saw this last week on the shelf at CompUSA ...

Memorex announced another 8x DVD writer for a while ago (I believe the 4x DVD-RW speed is wrong and should be 2x). This is probably the one you saw and a good guess is that it's a rebadged Lite-On LDW-811S.
The recently announced "true 8x" is probably a rebadged Pioneer DVR-A07 and will not be available before next year.
