can remove subtitles from movies?

hi...
can someone tell me wheater it is possible to remove subtitles from a movie using any video-editing tools?
(the subtitles are not part of the original movie but lately added in)
also I always burn my avi, wmv,asf movies(60 min) to vcd using ahead nero 5.0. It took 2h and the quality is good

I tried EO video 1.36 and TMEGenc plus 2.5
Judging by calculations, assuming constant speed
EO video would takr 5h to convert a avi (300 mb, 60min) movie to mpg
and TMEGenc would took 8h.
I gave halfway on both

I was wondering did i get the settings of both software wrong or is it really so long?
My Pc is PIII 1Ghz 384ram
