I'm on a 56k modem (remember them? ) and whenever I read a topic that has 'full' pages (i.e. if there are 2 pages, page 1 is 'full') the messages get cut off about 3/4 of the way down and I get this message:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in e:\vcdhelp\www\forum\templates\subSilver\cache\vie wtopic_body.tpl.php on line 43
Us poor old country folk who cannot get broadband are limited to 56k. A forum page that is 'full' often takes more than 30seconds to load at that speed. Any chance of increasing the 'maximum execution time'? Or is there a way for me to set some preference to make fewer posts appear on each page?
Thanks in advance,

Could you check this page
https://www.videohelp.com/test.php
and post here what it says. -
Thanks for the quick reply! The page says this:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/85.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/85.5 -
Strange that your webbrowser doesn't support gzip....hmmm..do you have any other webbrowser to test with?
It should say "HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip" if it supports gzip. If your browser supports it you will get a compressed version of the page, about 5-10 times smaller file size. -
Mac IE:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.21; Mac_PowerPC) -
So it is all MAC users that eating all bandwidth....
Why doesn't your browsers support gzip? -
OmniWeb:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, identity
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US) AppleWebKit/85 (KHTML, like Gecko) OmniWeb/v496
Opera:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: deflate, gzip, x-gzip, identity, *;q=0
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Mac_PowerPC) Opera 6.0 [en]
Mozilla Firebird:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip,deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031026 Firebird/0.7
Camino:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate, compress;q=0.9
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20030306 Camino/0.7
iCab:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.5 (compatible; iCab 2.9.7; Macintosh; U; PPC; Mac OS X)
Netscape:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip,deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 -
So does that mean that Opera is the best browser for the forum on the mac?

Thanks a lot Balders
I should call myself the Black Vegetable! *cackle*
Thanks also tgpo for posting all those results. I guess I'll try out some of those gecko browsers - last time I did any comparison Safari kicked all their butts (but apparently not in this case ) -

I am using IE 6 at work on Win2000 and i dont get any notification of gzip support either.
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)
I will try my PC at home when I finish work. -

No proxy server here -
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; T312461; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) -
Have you enabled HTTP 1.1 in internet expplorer -> tools -> internet options ?
-
Any other ideas Balders because the forum is getting slower and slower for me.
-
Just installed Mozilla firebird
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip,deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007 Firebird/0.7
Much quicker page loading times.
Would like to know why my version of explorer did not support gzip though.
