His name was MackemX
What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
Avant Browser with IE6 (should always be the same as IE)
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
No issues here. Of course this is on my pc... -
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)tgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have. -
So your browser does not support gzip either then Will. Give Mozilla Firebird a try, loads forum pages much, much quicker.

It may work if you install the latest explorer service pack. -
Wait a mo.
I get this (with firewall activated) "eTRUST firewall by C.A."
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING:
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
but when deactivated I get
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
so perhaps it is not just the browser, rather any TSR filtering HTTP
traffic or even IE security settings. -
I will try the service pack and turning off my firewall (zonealarm) when I get home.

I find I have to do this often - esp. with URL's with anti-leaching
software like doom9. With the latest security hotfixes, XP's built
in firewall is pretty good on it's own - the only big threat being
those bloody Russian web traps - and there is no noticable slowdown.
Check out GRC's excellent ShieldsUP test to see if you are

I have no idea what the hell is going on, I just thought by posting my results I was helping in some way

Bloody NTL has gone tits up, so I have lost my cable TV and my broadband. Will have to wait for it to come back on before I can try out the suggestions.

Its Zonealarm that is blocking internet explorer from using gzip. It does not stop mozilla firebird using it though. Have to try and find the setting in zonealarm now and turn it off.

To be honest Mozilla Firebird is quicker than IE even with the firewall turned off, so I think I will stick to using Mozilla anyway, and I seem to be locked down pretty well with Zonealarm.

Woo woo!
Safari 1.2 is available now, and hey presto:
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate;q=1.0, identity;q=0.5, *;q=0
HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/124 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/125
GB
This is with the built-in firewall enabled.
Cheers, -
