I believe though if you want all the formats including dvd-ram you should look at the LG GSA-4040B. It was also rated the best on Tech Tv. Also check out cnet.com, they have their 10 favourite drives too. -
I shall look at them. 8)

Well,I'm actually thinking of getting an 8x dual burner instead.
On the otherhand, why should I use DVD-RAM for?
What's DVD-RAM good for? This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit -
Make sure you stock up on DVD+r's, for that's all you can write at 8X. 8)

You said best: The best is the Plextor 708A I would hold off and buy second best (Pioneer A06) for around $130 oem and wait for the dual layered burners next year.
here's a review of the 4040B I would avoid

I love this review of the Plextor 708A by a person on epinions:

What so good about DVD-RAM?
How are they like a hard drive? This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit -
on ram you can just drag and drop things and delte things like a hard drive. For example you can drag 5 word documents, if you want to delete one of those documents, you just delete it and the other 4 are still there w/o reformatting your disk. Then you can still add more stuff to the disc (over 4gb). No need to finalize or close the disc. It's like haveing a 4gb hard drive. Very nice feature for backing up data

bnbhoha?
here's a review of the 4040B I would avoid ?????? ( yes I would avoid that review also! )
I suggest unless you have used one of these DVD burners, you refrain from
poo poo-ing it, if you go to tomshardware.com, they rate it highly, as I do. -
Colindale:
You're right, I don't own the 4040b burner, but I did do extensive research on many drives. Many people like yourself like the drive. I'm just passing information. This reviewer did a through test whereas Tom's Hardare and most other place did not. You're dvd-rs may work fine, but if there are really errors on the disc that may affect performance now or in the future, do you really want to take the gamble? I guess I should have just said read the review & decide for yourself, which I did and bought the Pioneer A06 -

???You're right, I don't own the 4040b burner??? ( enough said!.) -
Gosh Dangit! You're so cool, you just gotta get the last word in, huh? Like I said, read the review and then decide for yourself
