I just bought this drive, and it can't burn HD burn
when using Nero 6.0.028 it gives me "Power calibration error' before it starts writing to CD.
when using B's burner Gold 5 (came with drive). it gives me ' ATA error' just before it starts writing to CD
the drive burns regular CD fine, but i don't know why it doesn't do HD-burn
so far i've tried
1. formating and reinstalling winxp
2. different motherboard/cpu
3. using nero
4. updating Drive to newest FW
5. using B's burner
6. using different CD media (TDK, Taiyo, Maxell, Imation, Memorex, Staples, and no name)
anyone who has feedback or solution plz help! thank you!!

I have three of these burners. I can tell you exactly why you are having this problem.
A Power Calibration Error from B's Recorder means the media did not pass the HD-Burn pre-test. Optorite verified this in an e-mail I sent them many months ago.
Optorite only recommends Japanese-produced CD-Rs for HD-Burn. I have been using Taiyo Yuden since I started using HD-Burn and have not had any problems. You can get TY CD-Rs from allemdiaoutlet.com for about 38¢ per disc. I have heard that Fuji and TDK may also work well.
If you are receving a Power Calibration Error when trying to burn a DVD in B's, you have the same problem. The disc did not pass the media pre-test in the PCA.
I run firmware 2.16 on the two drives that do video recording and 2.17 on the drive that handles data/game backups.

I have a DD0401 and works great for me after updating the firmware to 1.30. Not sure how I can help you with DD0203 but if you seriously consider HD-Burning then I would suggest you get a DD0401 or wait until Optorite release a good firmware update.
With my DD0401, I can HD-BURN most of CMC media.

The only media that works very well with Optorite for HD-Burn is Fujifilm CD-R from 48X 80-min 50pk spindle manufactured in Japan (not in Taiwan). I personally did not try HD-Burn feature on my Optorite DD0203, but many users found that particular media as fully compatible.
I found spindles manufactured in Japan in local Best Buy stores, while the same spindles sold in CompUSA are manufactured in Taiwan. -

I finally used my DD0203 to make a HD-BURN CD yesterday with Fuji(TY) and it worked great.
Now if Sanyo would come up with HD-BURN for DVD's that would be even better. :P -

FW v2.50 is available,I installed it and my 4x DVD+RW discs are recognized and discs load a lot faster(10 seconds)...it still takes 2 minutes to finalize though. They added support for some 8x media as well.

I have to give a plug for Optorite. I got my DD203 on faith that the drivers wil come out and it will support more CDs and DVDs, and it certainly does.
Then even sent me some CDs free because I had some problems with a few coasters. Really nice people .
If using HD-BURN, look at their web site and see which CDs are supported. As for me, before I used Optorite and just did CD burning on my Teac. I was only using the Fujifilm Cds anyway, which are made in Ja[an by Taiyo Yuden). I have always found them to be the best for reliability.
The fujifilm CDs are easy to get at retail stores, heck best buy hate a rebate deal on a 50 pack for about 8 bucks per and 12.99 for 50 without the reabate. (I hate rebates). They are Taiyo Yudens and work great.
They work GREAT with HD_BURN.
For standard burning, I have had it work even on the real cheapo Compusa DVDs. Since the last firmware upgrade, no coasters no matter what I use. Although I got the Compusa CD just to see what would occur.
I really like HD-BURN for backing up. The great thing is, if I store some data on HD-BURN, I have been able to use Windows Explorer to restore the files !!
