"View posts since last visit" problem

I really like this sites notion of "view posts since last visit" but I am having trouble with the "last visited" time. Whenever I go to the "forum" page, the site automatically updates my "last visited" time with the current time. This happens whether I actually choose to view any posts or not. For instance if I enter the forum page to check for PM's, the "last visited" time is updated. If I come back a day later to read forums, the system uses my visit to check for PM's a day earlier as the point of reference for determinig new posts. This causes me to loose visability of new posts between when I last read them and the time I checked for a PM.

Can the "last visited" time be determined only when I actually view a forum(s), and not just when bringing up the forum main page??
