Curious as to why NetFlix does not have this DVD in stock? It was released in May 2000, yet for me it shows a release date of Unknown. Is it like this for anyone else?

The reason for this is because netflix is very good with staying on top of the "freshest" releases so to speak. Basically, what the deal with "The World is Not Enough" is probably that the DVD was released, however, another version is getting ready to come out which is some type of special version or superiorly digitally remastered. This has been the case with numerous movies in my Queue. Just to name a few...Something about Mary, Aliens, Swamp Thing, and I can go on and on.
When they're in my QUEUE i'll notice that they go to the upcoming or awaiting release section and at first I was like WTF..but then I realized what was happening. They were updating my QUEUE with the newest, freshest versions of those movies. I'm sure the same thing is happening with this Bond title. I know the 007 box series was just released, so i'm sure netflix may be updating this particular title which is geared for a special release.
Now, I haven't checked this title to see if it was every on "individual" DVD to begin with, so there may be a possiblity that that specific movie was never individually released on DVD. There are still a TON of titles that were released a long time ago on VHS, but still haven't been transferred to DVD. Movies like Indiana Jones were just recently released when you'd think for sure those titles would of been released a long time ago.
Either way, one of those two things is the reason why the date is "UNKNOWN" in your netflix QUEUE..and i'm pretty sure the first is the most likely. -
The reason for this is because netflix is very good with staying on top of the "freshest" releases so to speak."Terminated!" :firing:

I wouldn't say that. Pirates of the Carribbien just released today and in my queue it says it's status is "Long wait"
When there is a set release date for the "FRESHEST" version of that movie, NETFLIX will take the older movie in your QUEUE, for example "SOMETHING ABOUT MARY" and they'll move it to awaiting release so that when it does come out you'll get the newest release as opposed to the older one. If you check something about Mary on Netflix, the latest Special Version is the one you'll get sent, they don't even have the older versions of those movies anymore.
Another excellent example is Terminator 2 ....there have been numerous releases of that movie, but the latest is the T-2 "EXTREME DVD." And as soon as there was a release date for T-2 Extreme, everyone who had T-2 in their QUEUE had it placed in the "AWAITING RELEASE" section and since that time Netflix has ONLY offered one version of T-2 which is, of course...T-2 EXTREME...because it's the latest "freshest" version of the movie.
As far as "NEW RELEASES" go...I didn't mention anything about it..but yea...netflix sucks when it comes to new releases. I've even said that on other netflix posts on this forum. I almost never get any new releases through netflix. It's all old school movies which almost all have "available now" next to them. -
I must be special as I almost always get new releases sent to me the day of release, sometimes they ship them out a day before they are released so I get them the day or day after the release date. I'll have Pirates of the Carribean today as it was shipped on Monday. I've had very few new releases that I have had a long wait status on.

@ twinches, you must be special..because it's not too difficult to figure out that netflix does suck with getting out new releases...just like Thayne said.
Go to the site and look for Pirates of the Caribbean...it's at a long wait..the movie just got released YESTERDAY..so that's pretty damn ridiculous to not have enough copies to at least last a week. That's why I don't have any new releases in my queue as it is. I did once..a while back..see the same thing...netflix actually mail out a movie that wasn't scheduled for release until Tuesday..they mailed it on a Monday. The same thing that happened with your POTC...but that's uncommon and they suck at sending out new releases unless they are perfectly timed and you can send a movie back when they get it on a Monday...the day before the release. Otherwise, if a SINGLE day goes by...like it did here with POTC...forget about it.....don't hold your breath. -
I'm sorry that you do not get new releases quickly. I have been with netflix since 2001 and I did use to have lot of problems at first. Movies would take a week to arrive since they only had one warehouse etc. Long waits on new releases and even old titles. But I have seen a major inprovement in there service. Maybe the timing does have a lot to do with why I get them so soon. I do the 5 out plan. So I get a movie and send it back the next day. Normally I get one a day. So most of the time netflix is receiving one that I send back to them every day. Most new release come out on Tuesdays. So If you have a movie out, wait until like Thursday or Friday to send it back (depending on how long it normally takes to get back to netflix for you) that way netflix will get it on Monday or Tuesday and then can send you the new release. Also It might help to put the new release in your queue and at the #1 slot a week or two before it is released. That is what I do, so maybe it being in my #1 slot for a week before it is release helps me get it before others??? just a thought.
I went to my rental history and here is a list of some recent new releases sent to me along with the dates. You'll see that most of the time I get a new release the day of if not only a few days after it is release. Once in a while I do get a long wait, but it is not very offten. I do see that Pirates now has a long wait but given the popularity of the moive and that netflix now has over 1 million supscribers, I can understand that their invitory might not be able to handle the demand. X-Men 2 has only been out a week and It still shows "Available now" for me in netflix.

I was with netflix for the last 11 months and I got just about every new release in my mailbox by Weds the day after the release. and I would get 2-3 new releases every week the week they were released. I believe the trick is to be on the 8 out at a time Most all the time you have some come in to them on a Monday, Put the movies in your queue a month before they are released. As soon as they move off your awaiting release move them up to #1 and you will get all the new releases
The only new releases I didn't get right away were movies I put on my list when they came out.
I came across a few movies netflix didn't have also they were more old dvd releases that were already out of print and I couldn't find them anymore to buy either. -
@ twinches and birdygal.... there really isn't any room to argue here. Netflix is PATHETIC when it comes to getting out new releases to people..plain and simple. The reason that isn't debatable is because unless someone has 2% of an insects brain in their head..all they have to do is go to netflix.com and look at how many of the latest releases are in a long wait status within' a day after their release.
Pirates of the Caribbean is a prime example..not just because it's a new release...but because the damn thing was hyped up to be the best movie of the last year or so. With all that hype, Netflix still doesn't purchase enough copies to allow their members to at least be able to have the option to get that movie within the first week? That's just unacceptible as far as i'm concerned. ....Like I said..the ONLY way you are going to get new releases for the most part..is if your return titles come in the day before or the same day as the new release.
And yes birdygal..having an 8 out at a time plan would certainly assist in getting movies back so frequently..that you'll almost always get your new releases. But just watch the next few new releases that come out in the weeks to come..like Seabiscuit and Bad Boys II.....let's see how fast they go to "LONG WAIT"...my guess is within' 2 days.....that's pretty sad. You're in the business of DVD rentals..and you can only give your customers a ONE DAY window to get a new release.....lol.....what a joke. -

I can see you have no buisness sense

Well if Netflix or any other rental buisness has enough copies on hand to rent to every customer who wanted to rent it they would be out of buisness before the week was out. After shipping charges these rental companies would have to rent the one disc at least 10 times before it was paid for. I think we should all be fairly happy we have netflix and other online rental buisness Saves Gas, The selection is 1000 times better -
@ birdygal...you said I don't have any business sense? lmao....and then write some worthless, no meaning response? You just showed you're the one who doesn't have any business sense. You also make no sense. Nobody needs to be thankful to have sites like netflix..because netflix has started getting slick with some of their tactics. That's why Walmart is gonna put them right back on track REAL QUICK..and more and more online sites are going to start offering rentals....that's when it's going to get real interesting.
Once again, to have such a short supply...that an ONLINE MOVIE site only has enough copies of a movie to last ONE DAY...repeat...REPEAT...ONE DAY..is just down right disgraceful. What's sad is this isn't that difficult to realize...unless of course you have as I said before, an insect's brain....oh..or maybe it would be more appropriate in this case to say....unless you have a "BIRD" brain. -

Of course you aren't going to be able to please everyone....hell..Blockbuster even offers rainchecks for a FREE MOVIE if their guaranteed in stock titles are sold out. But at least Blockbuster gets enough copies to reasonably have them for MOST of the people who purchase them. Yes..Blockbuster is massive...but Netflix is expanding nicely themselves. I don't expect netflix will ever have enough of ANY title for all of their customers...but ONE DAY for a new release....and more specifically..a NEW RELEASE that was advertised for a long time as the movie of the year....well...that's just SAD.
This isn't about agreeing with me though......I mean..you gotta love how people come out of the woodwork to defend something just because they feel its a good service. You see it on this site all the time....one person has a defective DVD player..and they post that ALL THOSE DVD PLAYERS suck because "THEY" got a bad one. Same thing with media and burners...etc..etc..etc. It's clear that it's the MINORITY of people who have had no problems with new releases with Netflix. And once again..that's FACT....very easily proven...all anyone has to do is check the site. One day and the movie is in 'LONG WAIT' status. That's just disgraceful.
I personally agree with netflix being a good service "overall" but they definitely have some issues that need to be addressed as well. And one of those is purchasing a larger quantity of new release titles. In business like that..if you want to really expand your customer base you don't do it by having new releases readily available for one measily day. That's why I've only had about two or three new releases in my QUEUE with netflix since i've been a member.
But just because netflix is good with many aspects of their business and people are happy..that doesn't mean you come and try and B.S info that isn't factual like netflix is excellent when it comes to new releases.
Netflix SUCKS...and SUCKS big time when it comes to having new releases available for a reasonable amount of time...PERIOD. -
I don't bother with new releases - can get those locally, pay $1 for one, get 3 free each month.
The new movies don't really interest me much anyway.
I only use Netflix for older titles, Foreign, music or documentaries.
Most of the stuff I rent is available, but there are a handful that are always on Very Long Wait (and seem to stay that way for most of the year)
They've discontinued some stuff I had been waiting on and sent a notice that they removed them from my queue without any reason.
I only do the 3 out at a time, since it's more like one at a time - never get 3 on the same day.
Even when I send 3 back at once...the returns are slow.
If you're only using Netflix for popular movies, I think you're wasting money...just my opinion.
I also use Walmart to help speed up the waiting process on some things, and take advantage of the stuff they offer that Netflix doesn't (and vise-versa)
I have about 200 titles in both queues
I've seen a lot of 'em already...more interested in the extra features or widescreen editions on some.
However, I find myself buying a lot of out of print VHS movies that'll probably never get released on DVD. -
Heh, Ok. So this got a little off topic since I posted it, but I think I found the problem. For whatever reason there are 2 instances of The World is not Enough in their database. One instance has it as a "Save" feature while the other has it as a "Rent" feature.
