I am (learning to) capturing from old Svhs tape made with a Panasonic AG450. There is a lot of wind noise and background noise I would like to remove.

Using Virtual Dub to capture to AVI uncompressed.
Are there filters to remove noise in the audio for Virtual Dub?
Shold this be done during capture?

I am still modifying my hardware so my setup is not finished.

  2. You'll probably want to split the audio out after capture, edit it, then re-combine it with the video stream.

VirtualDub can do that splitting and re-combining, but you'll want an audio editor to clean up the sound.

There are several in the tools section, including:

Audacity - freeware, good but perhaps a little limited
GoldWave - shareware, very good tool
SoundForge - expensive, but the pro tool for audio editing.

There are many others - but those are among the most popular.

All will be able to do some filtering, EQ'ing etc.. to try and clean up your audio.

    Thanks.

One more baby step towards getting to finished product. It will be summer before I get to burning the DVD. :l

  4. By-the-way, you may want to look into using HuffyUV (which is a lossless codec) rather than capturing uncompressed avi.

HuffyUV doesn't compress all that much - nowhere near most MPEG codecs for example - but it does make the files 2 to 3 times smaller than uncompressed avi - with no quality loss.

The low compression ratio also means it's not very demanding on the system - so you're unlikely to drop frames because of it, even on a fairly low spec machine.

HUFFY it is then. I intend to buy Tmpgenc when I can figure out why their server will not let me complete the transaction. That is another software issue. May be Zone Alarm setting or an Internet Security setting. That is beating me up rignt now.
