  1. I captured dv avi (720X480), then I encode it on svcd using TMPGENC. My question is what is the best settings for ASPECT RATIO/SOURCE ASPECT RATIO/ VIDEO ARRANGED METHOD to be used so that I can view it on my tv full screen & got good quality video. I tried 16:9 (think this is for wide screen), i got good quality video but got black bars top & bottom on my tv screen as well. when I tried other setting including 4:3/full screen, I can view it on my tv full screen but I got poor quality video.

  2. Why do you capture at 720 x 480 in the first place?

    720 / 480 = 1.5

    16 / 9 = 1.77777777 (widescreen)

    4 / 3 = 1.3333333 (fullscreen)

So the aspect ratio of your capture is halfway between the two.

If you want to display some sort of widescreen aspect ratio on a standard 4:3 TV set, you'll have to put up with black borders at the top and bottom. It's called letterboxing, and it's the only way widescreen can be displayed on a standard TV, without chopping off lots of the picture on the left and right of the screen, in order to make the image tall enough to fill the screen vertically (this is more-or-less what Pan & Scan is).

Try different settings in TMPGEnc, but I would suggest you need 1:1 VGA in source aspect ratio (avi's generally do not have an aspect ratio set the way that MPEG's do). Then set 'full screen (keep aspect ratio)' under the video arrange method.

You will have some black bars at the top and bottom (on a standard TV), but you are not going to be able to avoid this if you capture at 720 x 480 in the first place.

If you are encoding as SVCD, make sure you watch the MPEG you produce in a player which will recognise aspect ratio in an MPEG properly (e.g. use PowerDVD not Windows Media Player to preview the MPEG before burning to SVCD). SVCD MPEG's look really wierd if viewed on a player that doesn't recognise their aspect ratio.

    cheers,

(P.S. any aspect ratio experts, please correct me if I'm wrong here)

you need to know there's a difference between aspect ratio and resolution.
e.g. 720x480 means NTSC resolution (interlaced), while the ratio still can be 3:4.

i suggest using the original size, so you won't miss anything. but you should always use "keep aspect ratio".
if you want to remove the black borders (i sometimes do that when they are small) you can use "keep aspect ratio (no margin)".

tmpegenc detects the resolution itsself, so you mostly don't have to worry about top field first/bottom field first, interlaced options etc.

...yeah you're right; sorry... ignore some of that stuff I wrote about 720x480. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

I'd still use 'full screen (keep aspect ratio)' in TMPGEnc though...
