I just got the Kawasaki Model#PVS166W Portable DVD player with a 6.5" screen from Target and was wondering if anyone had any info on it? Quality? Reliability? Battery life? I haven't been able to find any info on the web anywhere. It was only $166 so I don't expect too much. I can say that so far I am happy with it. It plays DVD's no problem and has a very good picture. I am not a videophile so I am sure some people will not be happy with the picture. Also, I have been able to play all of my DVD+R that I have tried with no problem.

OK. Here is what I was able to track down: It is made by Alco Electronics who is owned by or who owns Venturer. The player is reviewed on this website under: Venturer Model # PS166W. Also there is a forum link at Anandtech.com that discusses this player.

Although I like it I may return it and get the Cyberhome player at Walmart that is $50 more but is progressive scan, has a 7" screen (0.5" larger), comes with a carrying case and is a company with a good track record.

  4. sup bmmill72...I got the same player the day after Thanksgiving from Target as well. I'm some what happy with it, the only thing that I don't like about it is that it doesn't play any of my vcd or svcd's The 6.5" widescreen is nice though.

I thought about taking mine back as well and maybe spending a little more on a better one that would play my vcd/svcd as well. I noticed on the back of the Target reciept and it says there that there is a 15% restocking fee for returns on electronics, so if that's true it would really suck. Because that comes out to about $26...Have you returned yours yet? Any problems?...I was thinking maybe returning mine back after xmas with receipt and maybe they don't give me any problems.

That model you talking about at Wal-Mart. I never heard of it before, but from the stats on it. It does look like it's much better than the one we got. Progressive scan and .05 bigger screen is really nice!

Anyways if you were succesful in returning your player at Target with no problems, please reply and let me know...

Is that the one where you need to mix the gas and the oil together?

  7. ENTER THIS CODE AND IT WILL PLAY VCDS
    1. Opened Lid.
    2. Opened disc tray.
    3. Placed VCD in tray.
    4. Plugged unit into wall.
    5. Turned on unit.
    6. Used remote to type in 8132 and 8.
(If you do it wrong for whatever reason you can only type in 8132, I would then suggest starting over.) When you type the final 8 a line of text will come up that says something to the effect of "Region 1 ".
    7. Hit the enter button untill you reach region 9. (this is region free).
    8. Hit the play button.
    9. Close disc tray.
    10. Display will read VCD 2.0 while accessing the disc, and will play it.
    11. I do not have any other region discs other than 1, I mainly did this to change to VCD support, but I assume this will work since before It did not support VCD.
ONCE U DO THIS IT WILL PLAY VCDS AND EVERYTHING YOU TROW AT IT. VCD,1, VCD2, DVDR ECT.AND ALL REGIONS

  9. i have this dvd player.

i have several movies that are widescreen.

none of them play w/o bars above and below...
i have the settings both on the monitor switch and the internal config set to 16:9...but i still get black bars.

For example: pirate of the carribean, underworld, etc

What am i doing wrong? I've tried the other settings but nothing plays full screen...

    help!

    thanks

  10. You're not doing anything wrong - films in 2.35:1 aspect ratio will still have black bars, even on a widescreen display.

what clayts mentioned is true, but also remember that any films in 1.85:1 aspect ratio (such as Spider-Man, Desperado, The Italian Job, Friday and many others) will show up on your 16x9 tv without the black bars. If you need more help drop me a pm...

here's 2 really cool links with info on aspect ratio in regards to anamorphic films...after your read this you will understand why one of the aspect ratios will show up with black bars even on a16x9 tv while the other one doesn't.

    Anamorphic vs. Non-anamorphic (1.85:1 Film)
    Anamorphic vs. Non-anamorphic (2.35:1 Film)

    hope that clears everything up...
