  1. Hey all....quick question. A search of jumpy or jumpy playback seems to result in the same answer....CRAPPY MEDIA......or crappy burner.

Here's my dilemma. I burn personal (home DVD's, live concerts, etc...) ALL the time! I mean A LOT! I rip to ISO using DVD Decrypter and burn again w/ the same proggy. I never have jumpy playback or aritfacts.

I've recently backed up about 20 DVD's. I run them through DVD shrink directly to get my VIDEO_TS files, then burn them directly. I've noticed in more than a few of the backups that I either get artifacts or sometimes the movie skips chapters completely!

I feel I've ruled out low quality media. I use Fuji, TY, Imation, etc... All fairly decent and pricey discs.

I feel I've ruled out a poor burner or bad firmware because all my other DVD's play great.

Sorry for rambling.....now I'll get to my question: Do you think it makes a difference to rip the disc to the HD FIRST using DVD Decrypter and THEN use DVD shrink?? Wondering what people's thoughts/experiences were on this.

    Thanks.

I doubt that the problem is with the ripping or compressing, unless of course you are compressing to less than 50% of the original size.

It's likely your burn speed. I've read where 4x can cause the problems you mentioned on some burners. Slow it down a bit and see if that helps.

In my opinion...on my system...DVD Decrypter does a faster & better job ripping than DVD Shrink. You might try it. Be sure to rip the full disc with decrypter in FILE mode if you plan to compress with shrink.

    Good Luck.

Kind of along the same lines as Bodene said.

I would rip with Decrypter, you can compress with what ever you want, I personally use IC7 (it works great for me) then burn back with Decrypter.

If I were you I would invest some time in www.doom9.net to download Daemon Tools, that way you can load your ISO, check the DVD from the ISO file using PowerDVD or WinDVD before you burn it. If the artifacts and jumpiness is there when playing it on your PC then your problem exists in your compression. If the artifacts are absent but are present when playing the disc in your stand alone then you are looking at burn process or media. And if you burn the ISO with decrypter then you are really just looking at a media issue. I always burn with decrypter and always burn at 4x.

The Daemon Tools process take about 3-5 minutes to check a DVD and it saves discs...it's worth the time.

I do almost the same thing you do. I create sports highlight videos, weddings, etc...create the DVD and sometimes it is too big. So I use IC7 to compress some of the extra's that I have created to make it all fit on a DVD-R disc. As a matter of fact I just delivered 147 DVD's last wednesday all burnt at 4x on a Pioneer DVR-105 using DVD Decrypter but burnt on RitekG04 media.

For the record, I think your problem lies in your compression. If you are skipping chapters completely that's is an error in DVD structure (IFO files) and you may need to compress the DVD, then rip the ISO file (load it in Daemon Tools, then rip the virtual drive) and then use IFOedit to straighten things out. Then you would need IMGtools to create an img file, then burn with decrypter. (play it from the VIDEO_TS folder using WinDVD to check it before creating the IMG file and burning).
