  1. Just purchased and installed a tdk 840g 8x dvd burner and whenever I play a commercial dvd, the disc doesn't even get to spin and the computer restarts and the 0x0000007F code comes up. Have done the following without effect:
    1. checked memory - no problems in memory (768mb of RDRAM)
    2. upgraded BIOS
    3. upgraded firmware (to version 1.03)
    4. swapped out video card and used another one
    5. uninstalled the roxio software that came with the drive.
    6. changed hookup from master to slave to master on both primary and secondary IDE channels
    7. changed power supply
    8. enabled and disabled DMA
    9. upgraded video card software (have nvidia 5600 ultra card)
Also, cannon detect any conflicts within the system - hardware or software.

    Other info:
I run windows home xp sp1 on a dell 8100 pentium 1.7 with 768mb of pc800 rdram. Have 2 maxtor hds - 60gig and 160gig installed as master in both ide channels and have the dvd burner and another tdk cdrw drive as slave.
when i swapped in my old dvd-rom drive (NEC 5800) it plays these dvds just fine. also, tried to install the tdk burner in a second pc and it played dvds just fine there. I am pretty much at a loss at what else to do. Hope someone can give me ideas.

    Thanks
    Michelle

seems if that were my setup.....I would 1) put both harddrives on the primary IDE 2) Put dvd writer on secondary IDE set as master, and dvd-rom as slave. I dont know if that would help but I sure as hell would do that. Hope this helps!
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

  3. I am having the same problem. When I called TDK's tech support line I spoke to two different techies, neither of whom had ever heard of this happening, nor did they know how to fix it. I briefly had it working (I followed the diagnostic instructions that went with the installation of the DVD Max player (one prompt actually said, "Some DVD-ROM drives do not follow the standard well and cause various problems when playing a copyright-protected (CSS) DVD title. Please insert a copyright-protected DVD title for a compatibility test." I did and then it worked fine -- no crashes/reboots -- for a couple of days. Then, lo and behold, it went back to crashing and rebooting when I put in a commercial DVD. It works fine with all other media (records well; plays CDs; plays DVDs I've burned), but the commercial DVDs it won't play. Very frustrating. Especially in light of the fact that the TDK tech people don't have a clue what is the problem nor how to fix it. I just installed the latest firmware upgrade from the TDK site (version 1.4, available on 1/10/04), but that didn't help at all.

Neither did the master/slave solution offered by the other poster.

  5. Hey, it was worth a shot, right? It's a weird problem. There's got to be some solution to it.

Found this info about this error. Most common problem seems to be bad ram but not always.
