made a backup of my legal PVT copy of Bend it Like Beckham
for my Brother to watch over holiday. He gets home, tells me
that 1/3 the way in, the movie jitters, artifacts real bad on left of
screen, and then stops and jitters along until his Ge stand alone
    stops altogether.

He has never had a problem playing any of my backup discs before.
I asked him to check the disc, he says aside from occasional dust, nothing out of the ordinary.

Could DVD2OneX failed or perhaps Toast 6?
I intend to re-do again, the only thing I rememebr when making it was it was at the end of downloading some mpgs from usenet, that dvd2one was doing its magic,
    while Thoth was doing its.
Could this affected the processing of DVD2OneX in making the copy?
Toast did verify ok the disc.

any thoughts would gladly be appreciated before I attempt this again.
The original has one minor scratch, but it is towards the center of the disc.
I think I only remmebrer playing the first few minutes of it in DVD Player, and I do remember playing the extras ( 7 sec. of each).

unless your comptuer is slow it would not have "messed" up anything with background activity

    I would
    1. have your friend play the disk in another player, perhaps a comptuer to recreate problem (if possible)
    2. clean the disk!
    3. clean the dvd player (if possible)

    now for you
    1. did verification complete?
    2. it could just be a bad disk in the batch, perhaps another burn and you verifying it works

    1. My bro played in his slot iMac, same artifacting, and eventual erroring out.

    2. When cleaning the DVD use..?
This may sound like a silly question, but other than wiping off dust,
with a kleenex, I've never cleaned a DVD disc.
    3. I assume my Allasop Disc cleaner I use for my Aiwa personal CD player ( with the tiny brushes) will work for a DVD player?
Or should I get one specifically labled for DVD players?

I will reburn anyhow, and make sure it verifies, and test to see.
It is also a FOx Searchlight disc, are their any inherent CSS or
Macrovision issues I might need to be aware of?[/quote]

I too think this may just be a bad disc. I burned a copy of The Truth about Charlie a few months back. Played fine in computer and in settop DVD player. Went to take it with me to Michigan last week and it froze halfway through and errored out. Disc was clean, had been stored since that first play a few months ago. I think it was probably a bad burn that I was just lucky to have it play the first time. This was Apple branded media.

Sounds like exactly what I'm experiencing!
This was even put on Apple 2x media, burned at 1x.

I will re-burn tonight, following all the steps,
even making sure to watch more of the DVD
throughout, and verify again , and I'll post back.

I own several Macs. Unless they have superdrives in them they tend to error out toward the end, especially the slot loading variety.

You can try a different DVD player (standalone verses the iMac, or use an external DVD drive), try a different brand DVD-R (some are pickier than others), don't add a label (for some reason the slot-loading DVD readers don't like the paper stick-on labels).

..or let him borrow the store bought disc.

my dvd2one copy of beckham, doesn't do what yours does, but mine every so often looses the audio. i think it was doing it at the chapter points, it would pause, then play sometimes but have no audio. or pause then i'd have to tap the ff button then it'd play fine with audio. haven't tried it on another player yet. but real disc and copied disc are both totally clean. not sure what's up either.

just throwing out an option that sometimes solves it for me....

use mild soap solution to wash the disk!
make sure its really clean and dry before ripping

ive had some of the most difficult disks work great after that!

I just use regular hand soap. ivory is what we have now.

just a VERY SMALL DAB on the disk, rub around with yoru fingers, rince clean with warm water. shake dry and let airdry. I have a lint free scanner cloth i used to wipe the disk down afterwards to remove any waterspots that may be left behind.

I assume then, my Fellowes LCD Scratch free cleaning cloth
would work as well, in this instance?

I finally got some time tonight to attempt this...
been busy trying to figure out FCP problems at work!
I will sit down, clean my source disc, and see how it goes....!

Ok, the Bend It Like Beckham redo seems to be working ok.
The Ivory soap thing did the trick!
    Thanks Galactica!

    Now, for another question,
To save time, while working on this problem and another FCP/
Compressor problem for work, I had my brother in law come
over and want to borrow Identity, which I own, and had a backup
of already ( I find myself making more backups now than ever
to loan to people! Why can't they haunt the PVT 2 for 20 sales
like me? yeesh!!), so to save time, I launched Disc Copy,
made a DVDCD Master image (.img) file to my empty internal
HD partition, and then launched Toast upon completion, and
burned him a copy off the image file. Since I had made my copy with
the most excellent DVD2ONEX orignally, and when I loaned it out
to my brother before, he didn't have any problems when he watched
my backup, I ASSUMED that making a copy of a copy using Toast
through a disc image would be ok?

Well, he called last night while watching...and said that through
the middle scene ( where John C Reilly buys it) it starts to pixalate
and stutters. I checked my copy I made the image from, and it plays fine.

So where did I possibly screw up?
At the time of the burn, I was posting to the apple forums,
and had QT, Disc Copy, Safari, and Toast 6 open ( burning).
Could one of these had an affect?

The only other thing is that my media may have changed?
    I been buying CompUSA's 1x DVD-R specials for a while,
and this last pack, instead of silver top COMPUSA printing,
it has WHITE top CompUSA printing, and came on a 25 spindle
instead of a jewel case. I'm gonna take some BE-ALL's home
tonight ( these have never been a problem) and reburn the disc
image, but thought I'd throw this out there...?

Also, since I was in a rush, no, I didn't use the soap trick on my copy.
I didn't notice any smudges before burn though...

of course, it could be his emerson settop...!
