  1. I'm trying to encode a 1GB 137minute divx file to fit onto one vcd. I used kwag's kvcd templates but that just results in a much larger file. Why won't this work?

  2. A couple of questions ...

    1. Which KVCD template are you using?

    2. Have you actually encoded a file and had it turn out bigger, or does the TMPGenc predicted size prior to encode look extremely large?

make sure you have selected in TMPGEnc
MPEG settings->System->Stream Type the value MPEG-1 Video-CD (non standard)
These templates are based on CQ (Constant Quality) value
You can get this value with another tool like CQMatic
The whole process to find the right value named Prediction

i fit a 130min movie, with the right CQ and template, in 1 CD-R with acceptable quality !!!

You can find a lot of infos here

  4. Also make sure the divx source file does not have VBR audio, this really confuses TmpGenc. To check open the divx in virtualdub. If a warning about VBR audio appears, that is your problem. In that case use virtualdub to extract the audio to a wav file (uncompressed) and use that as the source audio when you encode.
