How can I back up 12 gig .avi files on DVD?

Depending on the compression method in the source avi (DV?) you may be able to compress it into a format like Divx which can be considerably smaller. Virtualdub can do that.

Don't know about quicktime, but mpeg1 and 2 are the same at equal bitrate and resolution.

8) mpeg2 is better .. its a much more standard format...and all th etools out there normally work with mpeg2. have you tried zipping up your file? this will also allow it to be split into 4gb chunks..you will need another 12gbs for the zip file tho...
