  1. These low cost players are supposed to have good dvd-r compatibility.
On the box there is no mention of dvd-r playback, I was wondering if dvd-r compatibility is stated in manual/specs?
I was just curious if it was bad marketing to leave this info off the box.

Well, you can check individual machines compatibility in the 'dvd players' section to the left of this site. Manufactures may not state the compatibility of their players with different media on the side of the box because they want to avoid legal problems with use of 'copied disks'. As long as they are compatible with the commercial formats, that's all they really need to state.

Apex might also be afraid that if a company puts out a DVD-R that isn't compatible with players it is Apex that will get the call from the angry consumer, and possibly be sued for claiming DVD-R compatibility and being able to play DVD-R's.

Not sure where you got that idea. My Apex AD-5131 3-disc changer will NOT play a DVD-R recorded on my Panasonic DVD recorders (DMR-E50 or DMR-E80H). Plain and simple.

I think the most reliable info is found right here on this site -- check out the "DVD Players / Compatibility & user comments" section and see what it says for any given player you're interested in, if it indeed doesn't mention DVD-R playback compatibility....

  5. If you check out the players/ compatibility info on this site, you will see alot of Apex players listed as DVD-R compatible.

  6. I own 4 stand-alone DVD players. 2 are Apex, 1 is a Sanyo, and 1 is a Pioneer. While both of the Apex units will play DVD-R media, they both have trouble with MANY brands of media that play GREAT on the other 2 DVD players.

  7. My Apex players have given me great results.
I have the 5131 and AD 1200, and have played the following media made from the following burners:
Lite-On 12x and 52x CD burners - VCD, SVCD, MP3, and Picture CD's made with Nero, PictureIt, and various other trialware programs- using just about every cheap media available at best buy and circuit city.

NEC ND1300A -R's burned at 4x and -RW's burnered at 2x, using Memorex from circuit city and Prime -R 4x from meritline.com, using trial of CloneDVD + AnyDVD, Xcopy Xpress, and also the freebie combo of DVDShrink + ImageTool Classic + DVD Decrypter.
    FYI:
I highly recommend Prime brand media from meritline, 4x -R's are 50 for $50 and the 1x are $0.69/pc and have the Ritek media code with either burnt orange or purple dyes.
Also recommend the NEC ND 1300A 4x which does -/+R R/W and is at newegg.com for $100 delivered.
The Prime DVD -R's Ive burned with the NEC (authored and back-ups) also have played on a 2 yr old Sony DVD stand alone, XBOX, and PS2
