Can someone please explain to me in language that a four year old would understand what this does?

I understand that conventional TVs cannot display the same brightness range as a PC monitor, but then I've read elsewhere that commercial DVDs have their brightness scale already adjusted to compensate for the limitations of TVs (since that is what it is expected most people will view them on).

Basically, my question is this... is there a rule of thumb based on your video's source of when and when not to use this option for most accurate colour reproduction when the intended viewing apparatus is a conventional TV?

I have tried checking this box on DVDrips & downloaded DivX encodes of predominently "dark" movies like, for example, Lara Croft - Tomb Raider. Now as everyone knows, most of that movie is either set at night, or shot in caves - so it's pretty dark anyway, but with this option checked it becomes *very* dark. The grey scenes become jet black and it's very hard to see what's going on at all.

On other sources of TV shows obviously captured through a PC video capture card and then converted to MPG1 (VCD), I tried it without this option checked and the result was a slightly washed out look without good colour brightness.

Now I'm confused, if I check it, dark scenes become completely black and you can't see what's happening and if I uncheck it, the colours look all washed out.

    Can anyone help please?

    Hi DRP,

This link may shed some light on your question. There's a lot there, but worth reading every word - it really helped me out.

It also covers most other settings in TMPGEnc, in detail.

    Hope that helps... Good luck.
