What type of video is it you are talking about? If it is MPEG-2 with a resolution of 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL then yes it can be done otherwise you will either have to re-encode or use a software media player (on the computer) which can resize the 16x9 to 4:3 on playback.

Well all you have to do is set the video as 16x9 in your DVD authoring software and when you burn it to a DVD-R or DVD+R it will look normal on any TV be it 16x9 or 4:3 as the DVD player will resize the image correctly because the DVD will tell the DVD player that the video is 16x9 format.

I like TMPGEnc DVD Author because it is easy to use yet fairly powerfull and most importantly very stable. You can't get as fancy with the menu design as you can with say DVD-Lab but it's all good in my book.

I've also heard good things about Sonic MyDVD Studio Deluxe Version 5.0 and the one nice thing about it is that it has an AC-3 encoder built-in which is pretty amazing for $99 USD (although TMPGEnc DVD Author is slightly cheaper).

  7. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author too, is there a way to change the Aspect Ratio with it? I really want all my movies to be in 4:3 without having to encode them

Looking at the help file for TMPGenc Author, it doesn't look like it

Possibly the conversion has to be done at encoding time ??

If you really want that specific aspect ratio

    I also use this software

TMPGEnc DVD Author sets the video to 4:3 or 16x9 automatically. However I have sometimes seen 16x9 encoded video that was incorrectly flagged as 4:3

One work around is to have TMPGEnc DVD Author create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders with your VOB files etc.

Then change the IFO files to read 16x9 with IFOEdit. Trust me I'm no expert with IFOEdit but I figured it out. It really isn't that hard.

Then I use ImgTool Classic Version to make an ISO IMAGE file and burn it with DVD Decrypter.

I learned the IFOEdit trick a long time ago when I used to use SpruceUP as my DVD authoring program. It would always set 16x9 video to 4:3 because it didn't support 4:3 but IFOEdit made that change rather simple and easy to do.

It has been a while since I've done it but load each of the IFO files into IFOEdit and there are one or more areas that list the aspect ratio for the MENU and the MOVIE. Leave the MENU at 4:3 but change the MOVIE to 16x9 and then resave the IFO files.

Then you are set (just make an IMAGE file and BURN to DVD).

Again for the record 16x9 is only supported if you have Full D1 resolution video which is 720x480 or 704x480 NTSC and 720x576 or 704x576 PAL

  10. I'm very sorry now that I have been doing some reading, I found out that what I want to do is not change the display, but I want to take the movie out of letterbox! Is there a way to do that?

This is not very clear at all.

I'm still not sure what you mean!

Are you trying to take a widescreen movie and make it full screen so it fills the screen (i.e., no black bars)?

If so forget it. You will only end up butchering the image by chopping off the sides of it. It's pointless and rather damaging to the film to do that.

If you mean you are trying to do something else then you need to explain it better.

If you are making a VCD or SVCD and you are using TMPGE then try the following,
In the Advanced window, choose No Margain (Keep AR) for the Video Arrange Method, just above this make sure you select 16:9 PAL or NTSC (depending on where you are) in the Source Aspect Ratio window.

For 2.3:1 (extreme widescreen) source it may not totally remove the bars.
