  2. There is a nice page describing Digital Video Resolution and Aspect Ratio Conversions. There are also some practical examples for the calculations.

    For example: to convert PAL/NTSC 720x576/480 DV to Half-D1, you first crop to 704x576/480, then scale to 352x576/480.

    The site is very precise -- did you know that "Industry standard" 625/50 square-pixel video's aspect ratio is not 1:1 but 768/767! The "industry standard" sampling rates used in square-pixel video equipment actually give out pixels that are almost square, but not exactly.
