  1. I've authored a DVD with Encore DVD and am experiencing some strange things.

    Here is one menu:

I have the buttons numbered clockwise from 1 to 5. When I get to the screen either on an actual DVD or in the Preview mode it always starts off on button #5. I can't press UP to get to #1 and if I press Right then Up then Left, Left it won't let me highlight the #1 button at all! However, if I use my mouse I can click it just fine.

There is another similar menu to this one that does the same thing except that I can access it by moving counter-clockwise from the Main Menu button but I for some reason can't press UP from the Main Menu button.

Another problem is that when I watch one of the clips on the DVD in my home unit and try to press the MENU button it displays the little "not available" icon on the screen and doesn't let me exit the clip. On the Preview mode when I click the menu button it doesn't do anything at all.

Does anyone have any clue on the problem or have a suggestion of another product to use for authoring?

    thanks

Do you have "auto-assign buttons" turned on? If you select just the menu properties you'll see the flag for it somewhere near the bottom. The auto-assign is crap, always put aside some time to assign your own button navigation. Once you uncheck that option go to the window with your menu. You'll see one of the option buttons at the bottom for TV safe area overlays and the like. One looks like a little compass with 4 points. Hit that and every button on your menu will have a similar-looking icon. The number at the center represents which number button it is. Each point of the "compass" is what button it will select when you press the corresponding DVD control. To change them click on one of the points for that button and drag to the other button to assign it there. For directions you do not want to use drag it onto itself (I can't recall if there's a way to assign it to nothing). This takes some time and some planning but it's totally worth it.

As for the menu button thing that has been bothering me as well. I remember using Maestro you could bind that to a certain point but I can't figure out where to do that in Encore.

  3. Thanks! That worked great! I didn't realize that button was down there.
