I've taken a home made video that is 59 minutes in length and burned it to a DVD-R using my Panasonic DMR E-20 Standalone.
I watched it on my Standalone AND on my PC (using Power DVD) and it played all the way through without a glitch.
I then took that DVD-R and made 3 copies for my friends ,using my Pioneer A05 Burner and Nero on my PC and burned them at 1X.
Two of my friends e-mailed me to say that the DVD "locked up"
at 3 minutes and 40 seconds.
The third friend said his played fine all the way through.
So I burned 3 MORE copies (from the master) using Nero (again).
2 of my friends said that the 2nd DVD "locked up" at 50 min and the third
said his "locked up" at 30 minutes.
They're suggesting that it could be the blanks I'm using.
I'm open to that, but how come ALL my DVD's I create, play perfectly with my equipment but NOT on other peoples?
It's so sporadic, I'm at my WITS end!

well dont use nero (try 'record now max') ..
the blanks sound like old stock budget cheap disks ... get some higher quality disks like ritek g03 or g04's (see media section for other suggestions and how to tell what you really have there (made in USA is no sign of quality for media (and pretty rare)) ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Roger, I have the same problem using two different DVD players. Virtually every DVD-R or DVD+RW that I create will lock at some point when I playback on my old Sony player, but they always play perfectly on my newer Panasonic. I have been using Ritek G04 media(DVD-R) and TDK (DVD+RW) for all of these videos, so I don't necessarily believe it is a media problem. I have used Ulead VideoStudio 7 to Author to my Cendyne 208 writer ... haven't tried a "copy". I have attributed my problems to the Sony player, and am so frustrated that I am considering replacing it ... it even locks sometimes on rental store DVDs. Like you, I am worried that when I start sending DVDs to others, they will experience the same problems.

So far all my disks are working perfectly when burned with Tmpgenc DVD authors built in burner! Try the trialware version, free and fully working for 30 days!
I had a few disks not work in various players that were burned with nero!
Now what I do for EVERY burn is open the DVD folder with the built in Tmpgenc DVD Author burner and click burn! Yes every burn! When I rip my DVDs for backups I burn those and after creating my own DVDS and testing with Power DVD I burn those, never so far had one not play or have any problems durring play!
I have a toshiba SD-R5200 2x burner and used leda/princo 1x DVD-r disks from shop4tek and now been using Ritek printable G04 (burns 2x for me) and Ritek G03 (2x also) from rima.com.
Course since I can burn G03 at 2x I am now saving my remaining G04's till I get a faster burner
Of course there are many players I haven't been able to test in, we can never cover them all, but so far I have no problems!
I been burning original content disks for others and haven't had any complaints either, so far!!
I figure it's as easy to open the authoring program as any other program so since I have it anyway and know it works I use it! Also no settings to wonder about, just select folder and burn! No way to make a mistake unless you select the wrong folder -
OK.
I purchased a copy of "RecordNow DX".
I've tried to copy 3 (homemade) DVD's.
I choose the "Copy" mode and all seems fine until it gets to 78% - 97% done and then just sits there and does NOT move from whatever percentage is on the bar.
So I've made 3 coasters so far.
What the F^$@+_K am I doing wrong?
Please make it simple as I'm PC Illiterate.
Should I be burning with this software ,somne other way?
Should I have chosen "Make a Data Disc Option"?

I had problems trying to copy a disc made with InstantCopy 8 with Nero. Nero kept on sying it was too large for the blank, yet it woud copy successfully with IC 8.
You could try using DVD Decrypter (free). Go to Mode-> ISO -> Read, then rip it. Pop in a blank go to Mode-> ISO-> Write. You could then use the .ISO to burn multiple copies. The same thing can be done with burnatonce (also free). -
Here I am again...pleading and begging for help!

I just had a guy that I traded 2 DVD shows to; say that they locked up on his PC AND Stand Alone player.
So I got in my blank DVD's today and thought I'd use RecordNow DX.
I chose the "check discs for errors and THEN record".
It found an error and I terminated the program.
So then I thought I'd try DVD Decryptor, and it was the SAME thing......ERRORS!
It seems like Nero is the ONLY program that will copy my discs 100% of the time with a sucsess rate of 75-99%.
I'm at my wits end to find a simple to use DVD copying program that will WORK for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I havent tried it yet, but I heard to run 'anydvd' in the background will help that.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0 -
Well first of all find a disc that is compatable with your drive, brand and price mean nothing, Use Nero CD/DVD Speed and do a transfer rate test (takes about 10 min). You want a nice clean line, start to finish. That will tell how well the media is matched to your burner. For me the RitekG03 2x burn and read fine. The RitekG04 4X, burn at 4X but the Nero test shows a poor read (jagged peaks and valleys), I won't use them.
A good burn/read should look like this:
Run a test on one of your discs to see how they look. Don't buy any new software yet. -
I apologize for jumping in like this...but I felt I didnt need to post a new thread.
MysticE, if you dont mind taking a peek at this I would appreciate your advice on the results. Normally I use TDK dvd+r but I am out at the moment but I wanted to see how my Maxell dvd+rw are. I would appreciate an oppinion please.

Here's an example of a Ritek 4X that burned, But you can see it's not a good match for my burner, way too many read problems. Surprisingly it may kinda play in some standalones. But obviously this is a bad choice cuz lots of machines will totally choke on such a burn.
