I've just read a thread about Adobe Encore's copy protection features.
Would this prevent simple dvdr copying in nero for example?
I realize that there are many program/ hardware setups which will read through this, but just wanted to know if you can you protect your authors from the average nero copier.

If you use a ripper that removes the copy protection you should be fine. I use Shrink or Decrypter to get the VOB's and remove the protection, then I drop the VOB's directly into Encore and the finished DVD works very well without any extra transcoding or converting, etc.
To do this, in the Import Asset window of Encore change the file type to "All Files" and you'll see the ripped VOB. Drop the VOB into a timeline, add your menu, chapters, etc. Burn the disc and...Presto! A working Macrovision free DVD-R in a fraction of the time it would take you if you added the extra steps of TMPGEnc, DVD2AVI, VirtualDub, or whatever.
Hope this works for you.
By the way, what's the link for the forum topic you were referring to where Encore copy protection was discussed? I'd like to take a look and see what types of copy protection were discussed.

Encore uses CSS and/or Macrovision, but I believe it only works with pressed discs, not burned ones. It may protect you from people with no knowledge of DVD ripping, but as the above post states there are still people who can get around copy protection on DVDs (i.e. pretty much anyone on this site). So unless Nero has changed you won't be able to do a 1:1 copy of a DVD with copy protection, but you can with other tools.

AFAIK, there is absolutley no way of including CSS on any recordable DVD media. You may be able to set the Macrivision and or CGMS flags. That will stop the disk being copied to VHS quite so easily but will not stop any body copying using a DVD rom drive, no ripper needed.
