  1. I have an avi file that has ac3 sound.... got a new DVD player and
wondering if this thing would play a hybrid type of file.... VCD or SVCD
quality video, with the sound stream being the orignal ac3... but I cannot
figure out how to stitch together such a file? What tools could I use?

The resulting file does not need to be a real VCD, my player will play
"un-authored" CDs (ISO with MPG files). Thinking that if it passes the
digital audio stream out, my receiver would see the ac3 and do the
    decoding.. maybe.

Its worth a try, just can't figure out how to create this Frankenstein file.

I've had most of my success with DivX Doctor -> Toast -> VCD, giving me
1st pass success, where over 30 tries (literally) with ffmpegX have resulted
in out of sync audio/video on the few things I've tried to burn.

    Thanks,
    Mike

there are some dvd players that will play divx and mpeg4 variants (likely the codec for your avi). but if you bought one, you'd probably know it.
So unless you have one, you will need to convert your video to mpeg (1 or 2)

You can mux mpeg2 video with ac3 audio (not sure about mpeg1) and burn as a data-dvd.

ffmpegX is the tool I'd use, but there several options.
you won't have to worry about sync from ffmpegX 'cause you are only using the video stream.

    or:
if you use 'quicktime to decode' when you are encoding your mpeg, you may not have a audio sync problem. Also you can let the audio 'passthrough' to keep your ac3 file unchaged, and burn the resulting muxed mpeg.

    good luck
