This is with virtualdub and its various avtaars such as virtualdub mod.
The codec has superb quality and compression- much much better than DivX from my experience.

    Download the codec from
    http://www.on2.com/vp6.php3
and run exe file to install.
In virtualdub video compression dialogue box select
vp60 simple profile for -rips from DVDs/DVD size TV captures
vp61 advanced profile for- mpgs from VCDs and mpg sized TV captures.

On your PC go to Program Files-On2 Technologies- vp6 vfw codec-vp6 user's guide.
The guide gives configurations for the codec at 40 kbps, 250 kbps and 500 kbps.
    In codec dialogue box
Select Real time fast encoding-VBR-progressive and enter other settings as described for
Simple profile as per 500 kbps
Advanced profile as per 250 kbps
    in the user's guide
In the Virtualdub compression dialogue box -check both the check boxes- enter force keyframes every 99999 keyframes. Enter target rate 50 kilobytes per second(=400 kbps) for advanced profile and 70 (=560 kbps) for simple profile. Use filters and audio settings as per your needs

Have encoded ripped DVDs with the codec at 400 kbps-with excellent results. Above bit rates should be safe for anything other than exteremely fast video.

Pl. comment with your experiences. This is not intended as a tutorial.

if you think i am gassing-see BJ_M's comments.
From what i can gather from the site-it does not use DCT like mpeg1,mpeg2 and mpeg4 (DivX is a variety of it) but uses some other mathematical transform and avoids blocks and jagged edges.
Have posted this to share experiences with other members convinced about vp6-so that i can improve my encodes.
