  1. Is it even possible to hook a videogame console up to a portable DVD player/it's built-in screen? If so, how?

I have a portable DVD with a built-in 7-inch screen and on the unit are jacks for S-video, regular video (yellow cable), along with audio (white cable). However, those jacks/ports are generally used to hook up (with the "special" in-package AV cable adapter that comes with the system) the system to a normal TV to be used as a "normal" stand-alone DVD player for the TV. As such, you can't connect a game system's AV plugs directly into those ports on the system as they don't match (the portable's AV ports are different, made for plugging in like those longer, thinner steel plugs)... so I guess you would need yet another adapter to act as a go-between for the game system's AV plugs and the portable's jacks...or something.

If you've hooked up a game system to a portable DVD - how did you do it? I've heard people say they have...

Also, the model DVD player I have is an Initial IDM-1731 if that helps/matters.

  2. From what i read on the specs it does support a/v inputs. And yes you will need an adapter that goes from composite/rca to minijack.
    something like this

  3. Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've been told that what I have on my player are exactly what you suggested - audio, video, and s-video "input" jacks. I've also been told that it is impossible to use these jacks to function with an external source...but what you mentioned gives me hope. I think I'll go to Radio Shack today and see if they have a cable or something similiar to what you suggested.

    Anybody else have further input?

  4. if they are meant to hook it up as a standalone player TO a TV, wouldnt that mean they are OUTPUT to the tv, if u want to hook up the ps2 or whatever to it, wouldnt you need them to be INPUT jacks? just like on the back of a vcr or what not...antenna in/antenna out kinda thing?

    just my .02

  5. yeah, okay, they're OUTPUT jacks that are on the player.....I got confused/mixed up...remember, I'm a noob - specially when it comes to portable players.

So, now that we're finally ALL clear that there are only OUTPUT jacks on my portable DVD player....Can some please confirm or deny whether or not it is possible?

Either with an adapter or some other crazy method?

If somebody can just tell me straight up, in all honesty, that it's impossible - I'll sleep better. Thanks for your further replies.

From the specs on the unit, it appears that the jacks are both input and output for audio and video.

    From the specs:

Audio outputs: 1 minijack .125-inch stereo analog (left/right), 1 digital (coaxial)
Audio inputs: 1 minijack .125-inch stereo analog (left/right), switchable with output
    Video outputs: 2 (minijack .125-inch composite-video and S-video connections)
Video inputs: 1 (minijack .125-inch composite-video), switchable with output

So it should work with external inputs. I'll try to find out more, what does your owner's manual say about inputs?

Here's more, from a review on Amazon.com - this person is using it with an input, so obviously it can be done.

I purchased this player prior to a 8-hour car trip with my 10 year-old son. The player worked great! When we got back home, I hooked the player up to the TV in my bedroom and am pleased with the quality of the sound and video. Another bonus that I did not realize when I bought the player is that it also accepts audio and video input. Though the documentation that comes with the player does not describe how to do it, I hooked the player up to my son's Gamecube and it worked fine. So next time we take a long car trip the Gamecube is coming too! Some minor nits:
    1) The included documentation is mediocre and could be more complete
    2) The power connection to the DVD player needs to be securely seated; on a couple of instances it jostled out which is annoying in the middle of a movie

From another website describing the unit:

Connections include S-video and composite-video outputs (composite-video is switchable as an input), and a switchable analog audio input/output.

I tried to find the website for the manufacturer, however I couldn't find it, and if you see it anywhere on the box or in the manual, that would help.
I couldn't find the owner's manual for this unit posted anywhere online, so I am left to guess how you get the audio and video into the unit.
My guess is since it states that the output is switchable with the input, you most likely use the same cables that work as output, as inputs also.
You would plug the yellow composite video from whatever source into the cable, and the audio to the red and white connectors.
Then, most likely, you switch the function of the connectors from output to input by either pressing a button on the remote, or through a menu that you access with the remote, on the screen itself. Unless there is a physical switch on the bottom or side of the unit, which I doubt.
If you can, post a picture of the remote. Read the manual and see if it says anywhere about how to switch the function of the output jacks to make them input. The unit will definitely do it. Just need to figure out the right combination to make it happen. But I'm sure you use the cables that came with the unit to make it happen. You don't need to buy any other cables.

  10. I think I can provide a perfect solution to your problem!

I found a great picture of your unit ar:

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2128764&sourceid=0100000030900866002498

Just below the picture of the unit itself, it says 'see larger photo'. Below that text is a small picture which when clicked, reveals the answer to your question.

    You will need items #'s:

    274-369 - Y-adaptor $4.99
    274-897 - Inline Adaptor $3.99

These are radioshack.com catalog #'s, I'm assuming you live in the US even if I don't.

To connect your GC/Xbox/PS2 to these, you'll need an "<insert console name here> to 1 composite and 2 phono' cable. I don't know what cable a gamecube or Xbox comes with as standard but the PS2 cable is perfectly suited for the job.

Flick the 'input/output' switch to input (or whatever it says - I can see it on the picture but cant make out the text), put the Inline adaptor into the video out socket and the Y-adaptor into the audio out socket.

Take the Yellow plug from the console cable and connect it to the Inline adaptor. Take the white plug from the console cable and attach it to the 'L' input on the Y adaptor and put the red plug into the 'R' input.

I *think* this should work perfectly. The only possible problem I can see, is that the two adaptors might not be able to fit into the player at the same time. If this is the case, you'll need to substitute either one, or both of the adaptors for a 1/8" mono to single RCA/phono female CABLE and/or a 1/8" stereo to two RCA/phono CABLE.

Sorry to complicate things in parts - just buy the parts from radioshack and try it! You cant lose more than $10 (delivery charges may apply).

Good job finding the picture, Pioneer. I am posting the relevant part here and it looks simple enough. I was sure it had to be done either with a switch or through a menu.

The switch on the back changes the output jacks to input jacks.
Since I'm fairly sure the unit came with output cables, he doesn't need to buy any input cables - these will be used the same way as the outputs, just flip the switch to "input" and plug the source into it (yellow from video, and red and white to audio). Very simple.
If it didn't come with these cables, then your suggestion is correct, they can be picked up at any electronics store, such as Radio Shack for a couple of bucks (Wal-Mart has them too).

  16. Here, let me put on my rocket scientist hat for you.

Take the video OUT cable from the PS2 and plug it into the video IN on the DVD player. Do the same with the audio. Then RTFM to find out how to switch the connector between Input and Output, as it does both. Composite only.

The first guy had a switch and couldn't find it, but the entire procedure has already been clearly explained.

  17. ok well if you read my post you would have read what i said that the connections are not the same because they do not seem to fit the video goes in but the audio one does not fit at all.. i am not saying that i have video when i do this because when i click the button on my dvd that says av/in the screen is just grey...so my question was if there is any other wires or connectors i need to using thats why i including the link to the picutre of the holes to show everyone what kind it was

Anywase I noticed that the portable only has an out jack on it which plugs into a tv for the video and an out jack that plugs into the tv for the audio..........My dvd player looks exactly like the one you guys were talking about a couple posts ago but picture this...........mine has no input/output switch....ya i know its gay.......I already tried something really experimental.....i plugged my gc to the vcr of my tv in the input jacks and plugged my input cables on my portable to my out jacks on my vcr........i turned on my gcube vcr and portable and the portables screen went black and stayed like that......but the audio of my gamecubes game could be heard from my portable........What the hecks wrong........and yes i have tried this with 2 vcrs to make sure the first one wasn't broken.....and same result........My guess is somehow i need to convert my input cable to output or something.....I have been looking for answers all day and you guys look like my only help......HELP ME

Yeah, not to thread jack, but...

Just got a new Mini-Van (OK, Yes, It's ghey, but it is for the ole lady, I swear it is) The built in DVD player has three RCA jacks just stareing at me begging for me to hook a game up to them. I am gonna try sometime when the Ole Lady is sleeping or something. Manuals are for sissies, but I damn sure don't want to smoke the DVD player or a game set.

Zappers wife; "Honey, why doesn't the DVD player work?"

    Zapper; "Huh? What?"

Zappers wife; "The DVD player, the one in the van. Why won't it work anymore?"

    Zapper; "What do you mean?"

Zappers wife; "The DVD player in the van doesn't work any more and the van smells like ozone"

Zapper; "It must have been the kids messing around with something"

Zappers wife; "You need to beat their asses"

    Zapper; "KIDS! Come here! NOW!"

Natural selection at its finest. Yeah, some day my kids will hack me up into little peices, but that's natural selection too.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?
