just close/quit out of dvd player before you do any region code switching.
now, just open the DVD with Video Lan by opening video lan, going to FILE / OPEN DISC and choose DVD.
It will then play the disk and you wont be down 1 of your region code changes.

Has any one ever needed to change the region code more than at the most three times?!?!?!

Try OSEx (after playing each of the DVD's titles and chapters with VLC), and in the options, set the Key Recovery method to VideoLan or VLC or whatever similar option is there in OSEx, and choose 'fmt' DVD Image. See if that works for you. You might need to install some RPC-1 firmware on your drive, or find someone with an RPC-1 drive to rip the DVD for you if you can't get OSEx to retrieve the key.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systčmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  5. i very rarely play back DVDs with videolan, because it's as buggy as hell and tends to randomly increase the playback speed so the voices end up like chipmunks.

this always works for me to rip a DVD of any region..

    1. insert DVD into drive

    2. as DVD player starts to launch, force quit it

    3. open VLC, and play a few seconds of the disc, then click the stop button - but DON'T quit VLC

    4. open ripping tool (i use DVDbackup)

    -Mark
    Swim with me
    And we'll escape
    All the trouble
    Of the present age
    Finally free

  6. There is a software (firmware) that makes your player region free. Then you can set the number of changes left by yourself with "regionX", wich is another software that works in osx. I don't know if it works with every dvd players out there, but it worked fine on mine.

i had to run the firmware in os 9 though.

  7. I have a Pioneer 106 and the only "Region free" firmware patch I've read about requires putting the drive into a PC. Do you know of any Mac based (either OS9 or OSX) firmwarae updates for Pioneer drives?

I have a pioneer 104, and the region free firmware patch worked for me (had to be patched in os9).
