  1. I have built a new pc for high end video editing. It is a dual opteron 246 system and I was looking for some high end software on the level of final cut pro for the mac. I saw the Avid Xpress DV and Vegas 4 software sets. Are eitehr of these on the elvle of final cut pro in quality or is there another that I should be looking for? Thanks.

I dont have a system anywhere near as good as that , i used Adobe Premier Pro 7 , excellent program simple to use as well. I dont think that you need all the power for the video editing its self , cos i'm only running on a 1800+ amd , its the encoding into the different formats that takes ages. Adobe Premier links in well with adobe photoshop. And the Adobe aftereffects package as well, all very impressive. Bear in mind that adobe arnt renound for being cheap.

Vegas is good, I really like it, the only criticism I hear about it is the media management is a little underpowered if you are doing a long project. I haven't tried doing anything more than 10 or 15 minutes on it yet, so I haven't run into that problem.

but it's easy to learn, pretty robust, rock-solid on my system where other editors have not been, and has a nice mix of the features for editing, titling, compositing and effects work.

    Trooper,

Nice hardware. To put something like that together and knowing final cut pro, you must be an experienced editor from the mac world. If that is the case, you probably know what you like and don't like. I suggest you download the trials for Vegas 4, Premiere, and Pinnacle Edition. Try them out. I would also include Avid Express DV in the mix (never used it myself though) but it may be harder to get to try it. The others will give you 30 days to play with which should leave enough time for you to find out if they meet your requirements.

    Have fun,
