  1. My first question is, why does it take so long for every program I try to convert anything to DVD compliant mpeg-2? I currently use Vegas Video for everything I do, but have started trying new things... and it is just so slow. I have the ram and cpu power, but it doesnt matter.

Right now I am trying to get faster conversions on .MOV -> DVD and it takes Vegas Video about 30 minutes to render 1 minute of video.

Does anyone know of a faster way? What are you guys using?

Mainconcept encoder is one of the fastest, but expensive. TMPGEnc is pretty quick. 30 minutes of encoding for one minute of video seems a little long, unless you are doing extensive filtering. Mainconcept can do close to 1:1 encoding speed on my machine for DV to MPG.

  4. Fill our your User/System Profile or tell us your PC specs and exact settings. Encoding MPEG video is very CPU intensive. Some numbers from the top of my head:

K6-2 500 encoding w/ TMPGenc from Divx ~12x source runtime per pass
AMD 1.2Ghz TBird w/ CCE ~ 1x source runtime per pass
AMD 2600 Palimino w/ CCE ~ 0.7x source runtime per pass
AMD Barton 2500+ (OC 11x200) w/ CCE ~0.35x source runtime per pass

So the CPU makes a big difference. Also CCE is much faster than TMPGenc or Vegas.

  5. My PC has 1 gig of Ram, two 40 gig hard drives, and an Intel 2.4ghz...

And as for the vegas video settings... I just import the .mov video, edit it, and then encode it with the default settings for DVD NTSC (template):

    Audio: 224 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, Layer 2
    Video: 29.97 fps, 720x480
Use this setting to create an MPEG-2 file with an NTSC DVD-compliant video stream, and an MPEG layer 2 audio stream.

  6. NeoDVD Plus is the fastest program I have found, however it may be a bit basic for those that want fancy menus and such.

what kind of editing are you doing?

when I use Vegas to do simple cut editing, rearranging and titling, it renders pretty fast. if I start piling in complex transitions, effects and overlays, it slows down in a hurry.

  8. Just simple editing most of the time. Cuts, titles, fade in and outs, etc...
