  1. OK. I am brand new to DVD ripping, just got a computer with a DVD burner and am eager to rip some DVDs. I need some suggestions on what software I need to be able to do the following:

-first of all basically copying an entire DVD to my hard drive and then using my DVD burner to make a copy

-second, I am interested in ripping only portions of several DVDs (selected chapters) and converting them from VOB to one of MPEG/MPEG2 or avi in order to edit them in Pinnacle Studio 8. Basically making a new menu for the clips.

Can anyone help me on what software I need to accomplish both of the above?

    Thanks so much!

  2. Sure we can help. For your first question, there are a ton of GUIDES on the left of this wbsite dedicated to backing up DVDs, either compressing them down to one disc or spanning them across 2. Some popular choices, tools wise, would be DVDShrink, DVDXCOPY, and DVDFAB. There are more, check them out in the TOOLS section.

For question 2, this can be done with tools like DVDShrink, where they rip based on chapter points or time. Again, there are more tools than this, chekc them out in the TOOLS section

  3. Thank you for the reply. I have been reading through the various guides and honestly it has confused me a little. It seems like I need several different programs to accomplish what I'd like to do. I was sure hoping for one program that could do it all.

Basically, my understanding is that I need either SmartRipper or DVDencrypter to get the VOB files from my DVD onto my harddrive. Then I need some program that will take the VOB files and burn them onto a disk, correct? So my next question is do I need a separate program to convert the VOB files into MPEG to use in Studio 8 or did your response mean that DVDShrink can accomplish this?

    Thanks,
    MM
