    these are some sort of image file to be written to dvd but by what?

    MackemX is correct, they're from Alcohol 120%.

    A quick search on Google suggests ways around any conversion problems you may have, and that these files seem to very popular with Playstation owners. If this is your bag, Google is your friend.

    when you decrypt a DVD in ISO mode with DVD Decrypter it creates the .ISO and .MDS files the .MDS just contains a reference to the .ISO so when you burn the image you can use either file.
