You can simply burn it as a data file.

  3. Will this CD then work in an external DVD player?

Can you burn other types of movies as data CD's like MPG files?

If its in divx or xvid form then a few players have that capability.
    But 99% don't.

Yes you can. But once again very few DVD players have the capability to play them as raw mpeg files. You could convert them to VCD or SVCD then the compatibilty increases. They will play back on your pc tho.

It won't play on standalone players. It will only play on your computer.

If you AVI is less than 20 minutes then you can use NERO to convert to MPEG1 and burn at the same time. When burnt as mpeg1, it can be played on most DVD players.

You have two choices for putting your avi files on CD - VCD or SVCD. Use Tmpgenc to encode your avi to either format, VCD is compatible with more standalone players than SVCD, but SVCD has better quality.
Mpeg files should already be in (S)VCD format and ready to burn.

Here is a good guide to get you started

I am sorry you are WRONG. There are some players capable of divx (avi) playback . Like I said 99% are not.
Here is an example of one................

There are others out there too for as little as £90 (UK)

Many thanks for the advice just using Tmpgenc for the first time now. After it has done the convert can i then use Nero 5 and burn this to a CD? If so do i select data CD?

    Yeap

Nope... you select either Video CD (VCD) or Super Video CD (SVCD), depending on which of those two formats you said TMPGenc to convert your original video to.

If you used TMPGenc to make a VCD compliant video file then you also select VCD in Nero in order to burn it. (same logic for SVCDs too).

    Regards...

DivX=one flavor of AVI, that some DVD players can (/claims to) play.
@Golfing: I suggest you read some of the AVI to (S)VCD guides under Convert left.

Have you done so? What part of which guide caused you trouble?

VCD isn't (mainly) supposed to be playd on the computer, but rather on a stand alone DVD player. To play it on your coputer, you can do so with a software DVD player, like PowerDVD.
Have you tried looking inside MPEGAV folder? There ought to be an AVSEQnn.DAY file in there.
