I want a vcr/dvd combo, but that has SVHS capibilites to capture my old vhs tapes to dvd. It also has to have the TBC.

So I was looking at the Panasonic AG-VP300 vcr which I could only find for $326, but I couldn't find any information on what i'm looking for. only thing I found out was the "4 Head Hi-Fi VHS recorder and SQPB (SVHS quasi playback" whatever that means! lol.

its great looking dvd/vcr combo player:

So if this player has SVHS capibilities with the TBC, i'm sold.

I have also been looking at the JVC HR-S7900U, but I much rather perfer the Panasonic.

    Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry, but I think I will have to go with this dvd/vcr combo player:

    more info here:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=220928...#goto_itemInfo

has the svhs and TBC with a 40 gig hard drive with so many damn features! Better than the jvc HR-S7900U vcr!

Sure is a little more money, but its worth it from the reviews I have read on it.

    why are combo units garbage?

the ones I have picked out certainly aren't cheap like the cheaper combo units.

They tend to cross-connect components and repair costs are much higher. It is also common to use cheap-o components, as most combo units sole goal was to lower costs over buying two units.

Not necessarily. And I do trust JVC... at least on older products, not the new rushed SVHS or DVHS units...

Plus there's no guarantee they pass on their savings to the customer.

And the price you quote is still dirt cheap compared to buying the units separately.

It's your money, get what you want... I'm just giving my input and experience here for you.

  10. You may want to consider this JVC which has the active video calibration and TBC plus only costs $149. I bought one and it works very well with the picture quality mucho better than any VCR I have ever owned.

I guess you're right Lordsmurf and thanks for the replies. Its probably not worth spending the extra money for a dvd/vcr combo. Might as well get a stand alone vcr player

Hey Bob, thanks for the suggestion!!

I was wondering what is the difference between the JVC SR-V10U and the JVC HR-S7900U?

    Thanks!

I finally got to see a unit this week, and it appears the SR-V10U is the same as a HR-S7900U ... odd for JVC to do that, and there other "professional" line is other products... I'm guessing they snuck in a rebadged 7900 to "improve" the "professional" line-up.

The 9800 still appears to be better, but that 7900 isn't too shabby at all.

Wow cool I got a refubished one last week for only $149. Seems to work very good although my last VCR was so cheap I got nothing to compare it too. This SR-V10 unit has some features that can link them together in a rack system which I dont know if a consumer model would have.

I gotta agree. Stay away from the combo units. Good luck finding the 7900. I looked all over the internet and the ones I found were dead links or links to units that were sold out. I got a refurbished one. I do have one question:

I saw a link for refurbished 7900 units that was sold out. I then found that there were a lot of SR-V10 refurbished units for sale at ecost.com. I was wondering if there is maybe some problem with these units or maybe there was a common problem with these that they got returned for. Or maybe they were all used in a rack unit and returned????

Ok Bob, I took your advice and ordered the sucker, should be here Saturday!

    Thanks, hope it works well.

Damn good price for what retails for $400 lol!!

  16. Agree with all who recommended against combo. There is absolutley no advantage except for having one box. To save money and space they share components hence repair is extremly high. I have a LG combo. Last year the DVD failed after 1 year of operation. I sent it for analysis. For the money they requested to repair the DVD I could buy 2 new DVD players and the VCR portion was damaged as well.

  17. I am in the same position in needing a better vcr as a source for capture. So I was very pleased to find this thread. I notice that on the 7900 they make a big point for the "19 micron" heads, while on the SR-V10U it isn't even mentioned. If they are the same thing is it just because it is implied on a "professional" model? Or is the whole 19 micron thing mostly marketing hype?
Incidentally, I will probably also purchase one of the refurbished SRV10 units.
thanks for all the great posts!

Also, I guess I should be getting the vcr monday or tuesday now. Bummer.

  19. I believe all of the JVC VCR's even the cheap ones have 19 micron heads.

Yeah... it's on all modern JVC units. My 9800 and 3800 units make no mention on the case or manual, but it's there.

  21. I got my SR-V10 last night. It's great! Just a warning, look through all the on screen settings. there are a lot of playback settings which make a big difference depending on your source quality. and there is one in particular called "hue illumination" or something like that which was on by default and you should set it to "off" or your capture looks bad.
thanks again for all the advice, my capture looks much better, and no skipping.
