Everytime I burn an AVI to a VCD it has to convert the file to an MPEG first (obviously), but lately it seems to lock up my computer shortly into the conversion process. This happens regardless of the program I use to convert the file, and regardless of the file I am converting. It used to work but now it doesn't, and I'm at my wits end! Please help.

Video encoding is very CPU intensive, if the problem is happening with several different program then I suspect a hardware issue. Bad CPU, ram, motherboard, power supply etc.

Yeah, I've tried TMPGEnc, and the same thing happens, usually 2 to 5 minutes into the conversion. I've closed everything I know of that's running in the background, so it's just windows tasks that I don't want to mess with, no actual applications or anything. But it still happens. Maybe it is a hardware issue. I think I'm going to upgrade my ram anyway, hopefully that fixes it.
Thanks,

Does this happen with all files or only certain ones ?

The decoder may have changed while you weren't looking.
See if Virtual dub will open and play it.
If it will, you can frameserve it to TMPGenc. -
who said anything about decoder changing, ive had new codecs that ive downloaded, but even wityhout using them they have interfered. quit acting like youre the video god

If I have bad codecs that are messing up my computer, how can I find out which ones and get rid of them? And yes, it happens with any and every file I try to convert. I don't remember downloading any new codecs, but it's been doing this for a little while, so that could be it ... is there a program that can scan my system for codecs and tell me which ones might be causing problems?

Ricky , I wish you would explain what you think I've done to piss you
off. I said just about the same thing you did. Something has changed
in the original posters configuration.

yes they can interferwe, some codec packs have s[pyware or are bundled with other nasty thigs that can interfere without you even knowing it

I have been trying to convert AVi to MPEG for some time now....WhenI use TMPGenc it always makes the outcome file so much larger...I was using DVD2SVCD and that was working great converting to a size not much larger than the original...but now I get an error can not find scenarist file. Does anyone know why this would happen..
Thanks
