  1. Everytime I burn an AVI to a VCD it has to convert the file to an MPEG first (obviously), but lately it seems to lock up my computer shortly into the conversion process. This happens regardless of the program I use to convert the file, and regardless of the file I am converting. It used to work but now it doesn't, and I'm at my wits end! Please help.

Video encoding is very CPU intensive, if the problem is happening with several different program then I suspect a hardware issue. Bad CPU, ram, motherboard, power supply etc.

When you say "IT has to convert" are you converting using the burning program? if so, try TMPGEnc .

You should try progrma like TMPGEnc and if it still locks up then try clearing up memory for the encoding program , because it does use a lot of memory. "Best thing to do is to avoid running programs in the background while encoding"

  5. Yeah, I've tried TMPGEnc, and the same thing happens, usually 2 to 5 minutes into the conversion. I've closed everything I know of that's running in the background, so it's just windows tasks that I don't want to mess with, no actual applications or anything. But it still happens. Maybe it is a hardware issue. I think I'm going to upgrade my ram anyway, hopefully that fixes it.

    Thanks,

The decoder may have changed while you weren't looking.
See if Virtual dub will open and play it.
If it will, you can frameserve it to TMPGenc.

  10. If I have bad codecs that are messing up my computer, how can I find out which ones and get rid of them? And yes, it happens with any and every file I try to convert. I don't remember downloading any new codecs, but it's been doing this for a little while, so that could be it ... is there a program that can scan my system for codecs and tell me which ones might be causing problems?

Ricky , I wish you would explain what you think I've done to piss you
off. I said just about the same thing you did. Something has changed
    in the original posters configuration.

who said anything about decoder changing
You did when you asked whether the codecs had changed.

even wityhout using them they have interfered
If they aren't used they can't interfere can they ?

you can download GSpot and check out all the audio and video codecs you have installed on your computer. But I don't know if this is gonna help you. Did you ever download a codec pack, like Nimo etc.?
