  1. Hi,

Well I'm capturing dv and want to convert the capture to xvcd. I'm using video studio and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to convert the 4 gig segements from 98se. I guess I'll upgrade to windows 2000, but first I want to make sure afterfware I can just dump the 20 gig capture directly into TMPGEnc and convert to xvcd?

    Thanks, Jerry

  2. TMPGEnc has a "add" feature under MPG tools. First encode each section under the VCD or SVCD template of your choice making a MPG file for each 4GB source file. When done, go to the MPG tools section and just "add" them creating a joined MPG file. Works fine. I do it all the time.

  3. Should be no problem. I recently dumped a 1 hr. 45 min. video to DV using my camcorder as pass through in one go creating one huge file on my hard disk. I was able to convert it to VCD using tmpgenc without any problems.

  4. Windows XP with NTFS partitioning may be a better option (I am currently thinking about it)

There seems to be, however, a number of issues to clarify first, such as will all the capture, encoding, authoring & burning software cope with NTFS partitioning. Then, what about all the other software I have...

Nero 5.5.5 is their official XP version but I haven't seen any specific reference to being OK with NTFS. But seeing I have given up on Nero for the time being this does not matter to me (use VCDImagerEasy+Cdrdao).....

At this stage, unless you are capturing & preparing (s)vcd's on a very regular basis (daily, professionally) I think it better to stick with the 4GB limit and let TMPGEnc encode to separate mpg files, then join them together. It works well. - If it aint broke, why fix it... Also, why not let the bugs get ironed out with XP.

Nero works fine on my system with Windows XP with the NTFS. =)

  6. There is one more thing to consider, I don't know if TMPGenc encodes directly from a Type 1 DV file, if it does then there is no problem. But if you have to concert that file to Main Actor DV, or MJPEG, or uncompressed you still have a 5 gb limit under W2K, this is created by the AVI file.
