  1. I'm looking for suggestions on converting DivX files that I have so that I can watch them on my DVD player. The files are all 512x384. I know it's not a good idea to convert them up, but would a 480x480 SVCD resolution work? If I convert it down, the only resolution I would have to choose would be that of a VCD.

Go ahead and convert to DVD MPEG-2 at 352 x 480 resolution. It should work okay.

  3. 352x480 isn't really converting up, as you'll letterbox the vertical resolution to preserve the DAR. So as mentioned above 352x480 would be the best choice, IMHO.

You can do this with either TMPGenc, VDub or AVISynth.

  4. Thanks guys. One more thing, since I"ll be going 352x480 (half D1), would it better to move the converted files on to a DVD and use a high bitrate when I convert like 2000 min, 4000 avg. 6000 max? If I do that, I could fit about 4 episodes on a DVD. I don't have a DVD burner, nor do I have the space to house episodes being around 1+ GB in size.

I'm thinking of just using the CVD template by puertorican and changing the audio to 44Khz instead of 48khz, so that by DVD player will play the CD correctly. I would use a 2 pass VBr method in TMPGEnc. I'm worried that the bitrate may be too low around 2200 avg. or so. Since DivX is already compressed a lot, would I run into any problem in converting it this way?

The source DivX file is in a 1:1 VGA resolution, meaning it's meant for viewing on a computer. In the video arrange area of TMPGEnc, I can choose full screen, etc. Which should I choose?

A 2000 avg. for CVD will look good, I sometimes go as low as 1700. The minimum should always be 0 or close to it (I set it at 250), and the maximum in this case should be the SVCD max of 2500.

Video arrange should be Full screen (keep aspect ratio) to preserve the Display Aspect Ratio, either full or wide screen.
