  1. Was wondering if it was possible or if there was any software available that would let me capture clips off of DVD's using only my PC's DVD-ROM drive. Or is the only solution to hook up a DVD player to a capture card?

    Thanks.

  2. Can you give a little more detail? I must be really misinterpretting your question. As far as pulling the dvd informaton to your computer, that is simple using a NUMBER of tools.

use dvdshrink to rip down the clip of a dvd you own and then use a conversion tool like TMPGENC or CCE to convert to mpeg.

  3. Sorry, reading it over, my question does seem a bit unclear...

What I want to know is if it is possible to capture clips off of a DVD directly to MPEG/AVI format "on the fly." Instead of either hooking up a DVD player to a capture card or ripping the DVD and converting it to MPEG, I just want to get PARTS of a DVD video (a minute or two at a time) directly to MPEG, avoiding the process of capturing it with a capture card OR ripping the WHOLE dvd...

    Thanks alot.

DVD Shrink to capture (cut) any part of movie you want. resultant files are in vob format. many utilities (some free) to convert to mpeg/avi. no on the fly method i know of, though.

  5. for the mpeg part, I believe you can use a ripper (recommend dvd shrink) to rip the parts you want. When you have the vob file on your hard drive, just change the extension to mpg or use a tool like iso buster to do the conversion. It will be dvd compliant (fps, resolution, etc.).

For avi conversions, you could use powervcrII or something like that.

  6. I've thought about doing this too and it's possible with DVD2SVCD if you're willing to do some editing. In that program you can choose to rip a certain chapter of a movie and only that chapter that might have your favorite scene. You can then take that mpeg chapter and edit it with some authoring program. I use WinDVD creator and it lets me output to a file I can burn to a disc.

    Hope it helps,
