export the sound of the avi using goldwave, and then import into tmpgenc as separate video and audio files

Encoding the video to DivX doesn't have a thing to do with the audio. Not a blessed thing.

Do a little research on TMPGEnc and VBR or AC3 audio. You will find that TMPG won't deal with either, and you have to do extra steps to get it to work.

  4. Like the people before me said it isn't the xvid codec causing the problem. My guess is that you are dealing with AC3. If you have VirtualDub you can open up the AVI and see for yourself. Go to www.doom9.org and in the download section scroll down to filters. Download the Audiofilters and register the one for your OS. Bet it works now

Decompress your Xvid file with the decompressor from AVI2VCD, then load the much larger uncompressed file into tmpgenc and process as you normally would.
Just shut up and listen dumbass
