    Codec for what?

Source is what? DVD, Capture, AVI, MPE1, MPEG2?

Destination is what? DVD, DivX, VCD, SVCD, xVCD, xSVCD, CVD, XVCD, KVCD, RM, WMV, MOV, Mini DVD, etc.

If you are having macroblocking (the artifacts on the screen) it can have nothing to do with the codec and everything to do with the bitrate 9you don't think you can put a DVD movie on a CDR and have it look exactly the same?).

We need details to help you.

    AVI:

DV AVI as in a cam?
Downloaded AVI? Size and Length of file(s)?

You have several options. For DVD you want MPEG2 video. You have a number of resolutions to choose from here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvd

    Garbage in = Garbage out

You can usually do pretty good going to 352x480. Sometimes 704x480 is better (for those 640x480 AVI's). It depends on the source resolution. There's no hard/fast rule, except that going 'up' (bigger) in resolution doesn't gain you any quality. It will only look as good as the source does.
