  2. Since a VOB is essentially an MPEG file, any program that demuxes the VOB into elementary streams should work.

Not exactly. This is a container format like zip, rar etc. that DVD understands and can access MPEG stream inside.
There are tools that will allow you open and extract video or audio streams from it like VOBedit or VOBrator. Vegas can do it as well.

TMPEG is also excellent for demuxing and remuxing vob files. Go to Mpeg Tools in the file menu and open.

You may run into problems doing it like this. I suggest VOBEdit too.

  7. It also depends what sort of MPEG you want - what's your overall aim?

MPEG is used in VCD (MPEG-1), SVCD & DVD (MPEG-2) and if you want to be pedantic, DivX etc.. is also MPEG (MPEG-4).

You'll have to be a bit more specific if you want specific help.

Also, there are dozens of guides about this in the guides section over on the left.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
