CD/DVD labels and DVD media

There were several topics in the past regarding applying labels on DVD disks. Many DVD burner users strongly recommend not to apply CD/DVD labels on burned DVD’s and they confirm that the DVD will have “stuttering” or read error issues after applying the label.

Yesterday I burned a DVD movie on TDK 2X DVD-R disk using my Optorite DD0203 burner. The movie played perfect on PC DVD-ROM drive, xBox and Samsung stand-alone DVD player. Even the extras, special features, etc. (closer to the outer side of the disk) played with no problem at all. I printed a label with my Epson Photo 825 inkjet printer using Neato CD/DVD labels and applied to the DVD with CD Stomper Pro, played back on stand-alone DVD player, and… got the read errors and “stuttering” issues. This is another proof that CD/DVD labels should not be used even with high quality DVD media (I find TDK CD and DVD media is one of the highest quality on the market). Why would label manufacturers label their product as CD/DVD labels if their labels ruin the DVD? I ruined so many DVD’s in the past until I found out that all problems come after applying labels. Yesterday I just wanted to give another try and confirmed the cause of all problems. Who should I ask for refund for my coaster that I made yesterday, and all others that I made in the past? It is neither burner’s fault nor media’s fault. This is the label’s (or applicator’s) fault!

However, some users state that they have no problems with DVD’s after applying the labels. If this is true, what kind of labels, applicators and printers do you use? Your reviews on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I use the Memorex label system with my epson 880.
No problems. I let my labels dry at least 10 min before applying.

The last time this issue was brought up I noticed a high correlation between DVD-R and the problem. Those with DVD+R do not seem to be having the problem (or at least not so much). I have burned and labeled (using a 4 year old CD stomper) over 50 DVD+R disks from HP, Imation, Fujitsu and TDK without a single problem. I let the label dry for a minute before applying and don't smash the disk very hard when applying the label. I use the Matte CD stomper labels printed on an HP 930 printer.
