I'm backing up some DVDs. Converted to .AVI (DIVX), good quality. However, when I convert them to SVCD using TMPG, the picture is jerky. It's very slight and happens about every 3 secs and lasts a split second. But it is very annoying.
I'm using the following settings:
Super SVCD template (PAL)
Rate Control Mode - CQ at calculated bitrate)
Encode Method - Interlace
Motion Search Precision - Normal
I avoid using 2 pass VBR as it takes ages.
I'm using a Pentium 3, 600mhz, with 64 meg RAM. Can any one help?

Check to see if the origianl is PAL too. If it is NTSC, should use NTSC to make SVCD.

if the original is NTSC and you use a PAL template, you will lose 4.97 frames every seconds, which will obviously make for a jerky movie. anyway, you might have your bitrate too high as well

How can I check - if the AVI file is NTSC or PAL.. Or is there any other way to check this ?

Hey, ... if it is a US Movie then it's NTSC - Where did you buy it?
Just use "CBR" and use a bitrate Calc !!!
Set Quality to HIGH!
Under "ADVANCED" : Video-Source Type set to "NON-INTERLACED"
And : SOURCE ASPECT RATIO : 1:1 VGA
THATS IT -
Ignore ultradna he does not understand the problem.
I have not found any other way around this problem than to convert NTSC material to NTSC SVCD and PAL to PAL SVCD.
I know there are some profesional equipment that can remake (interpolate) the missing frames from the NTSC to PAL conversion to make it totally smooth, but as of now i donīt know of any software that can do this in any way short of recompressing the whole film (which would degrade the material).
Thunes: to check what format your .AVI is just right click on properties and look for the framerate, if it is 25 frames/sec its PAL and if its 23.97its NTSC.
